With its picture-perfect beaches, sublime climate and romantic allure it is little wonder the Indian Ocean destinations regularly top the wish-lists of honeymooners, says Lisa James
he Indian Ocean has long ‘ticked all the boxes’ for couples looking to tie the knot and honeymoon in exotic climes.
What’s more, couples are realising the signifi cant cost benefi ts of a marriage abroad: the average UK wedding now totals £21,000, according to the UK Alliance of Wedding Planners – with Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Seychelles and the Maldives among the most popular destinations for couples looking to get hitched overseas. One of the attractions, according to Mark Boullé, Marketing Manager of Seychelles and Mauritius specialist Beachcomber Tours, is that it’s relatively stress-free to organise. “Weddings are so easy to arrange and book. The
hotels do all the groundwork and take care of all the legal requirements so when the couples arrive everything is in place. And the hotels offer only one wedding a day – many destinations in other parts of the world do not guarantee this. “For honeymooners, there’s a great choice
of hotels. Mauritius is particularly popular as it’s served with excellent air access – direct fl ights with British Airways and Air Mauritius and double-daily on A380 fl ights via Dubai with Emirates. Plus there’s little or no jet-lag. “BA is changing its return fl ight from a
day service to a night fl ight from March 31, giving honeymooners a little more time on the island,” added Boullé. Alison Scott, Marketing Director at Simpson
