Stewart Garden Schools campaign continues to grow as year three gets underway

Stewart Garden, the gardening division of UK manufacturer Stewart Group Holdings, has launched its Stewart Garden Schools campaign for 2015. Now in its third consecutive year, the campaign promotes children across the UK to begin growing their own fruit and vegetables. After Bradley Barton Primary School took first prize in 2014 with its Wizard of Oz inspired garden, the challenge is on to create something special in 2015 as part of the celebration surrounding Stewart Group Holdings 70th Anniversary as a UK manufacturer of gardening products. Based on the popular musical, Barton Primary School’s winning creation featured scarecrows, floral rainbows and woodland made of peas. The pupils also created a wormery to break down old leaves for garden compost. The Stewart Garden Schools campaign challenges schools to be creative with Stewart Garden products. Every entrant in this year’s campaign studied growing seeds and explored the differences between electric and non- electric propagators.

Almost 200 schools across the UK, from the Isle of Wight to Stirling, have participated in the Stewart Garden Schools Campaign since 2014. Participating schools receive garden products worth over £400 and three varieties of easy- grow vegetable seeds from Pippa Greenwood’s range. Additionally, compost was donated by participating garden centres and professional growers’ specialist, J Arthur Bowers. Building on previous year’s success the top ten entrants in the Stewart Garden Schools campaign 2015 will receive a generous level of prize money. The winning school will receive £1,000 to spend at its local garden centre. The nine runners up will each receive £100. In partnership J Arthur Bowers will donate £500 worth of vouchers to the winner and the nine runners up’s prize money. The global electronics giant, Brother, is again supplying its sophisticated GL200 garden label printer. Looking forward to the upcoming campaign, Nigel Thompson, sales director at Stewart Garden said: “The Stewart Garden Schools

campaign has really captured the imagination of school children in the last two years. We’re looking forward to seeing what ideas our entrants will come up with in 2015.” This year’s Stewart Garden Schools campaign kit will include Stewart Garden propagators, seed trays, plant pots, troughs and watering cans. The company has also produced promotional materials and an informative booklet. The Stewart Garden Schools campaign 2015 is open to school pupils aged 6-11 years. To inspire young people and give your local school the chance to win £1,000, nominate yourself or a school near you. Contact Emma De Maio on 07921 160 134 or email emma@redheadpr.co.uk.

Cultural diversity explored

St Benedict's School students crossed cultural boundaries with their latest theatrical production, a gripping dramatisation of 'Bodas de Sangre' (‘Blood Wedding’), the classic work by revered Spanish playwright, Federico Garcia Lorca. The production was produced and directed by Modern Languages teacher Mrs Isabelle Payne and staged by the Modern Foreign Languages department. It had a cast of nearly thirty students aged 8 to 17 years old and has set a school precedent, as the entire work was performed - as it was written - in Spanish.

Audiences were treated to a magical guitar performance of 'Concierto de Aranjuez', cajon drumming and several Spanish songs including a wonderful rendition of the Nana lullaby. They also enjoyed being transported down to the southern region of Andalucia by the School's flamenco dancers and castanet group. The play was a vivid reflection of the school's commitment to promote the teaching and learning of modern languages. For Mrs Payne it was a labour of love: “It has been my great privilege to work with such a talented and hard-working cast and crew, to pass on my love of Spanish literature, language and culture and to stimulate a growing interest among our students - young and old alike - in learning about other cultures and languages.”
