Bett 2015 preview

Get ready for a busy Bett 2015! I

n our second look at 2015’s Bett show at ExCel in London, Education Today picks out another raft of exhibitors from the 600 plus companies showcasing their wares this year. Absolute Software, a leader in device management and security software will this year be attending Bett with OEM partners HP, Lenovo and Microsoft, and new channel partner and education tech distributor, Douglas Stewart EDU. Absolute’s team will be on hand at the show with all of its partners to discuss the importance of device and data security in the education sector (stands D146, C260, D270 and B180, respectively).

With limited resources and fines for losing information, protecting pupils’ laptops, tablets and the data stored on them is a priority for educational establishments. With Absolute Computrace, schools, universities and colleges are able to persistently track and secure all of their devices within a single cloud-based console as well as offer a solution for student owned devices. Mark Grace, Vice President of World-Wide OEM and Business Development at Absolute Software comments: “We are delighted to be attending Bett this year, particularly since we have recently announced our partnership with the education tech distributor, Douglas Stewart EDU, who will also be present at the show. Laptops and tablets enhance the learning experience of pupils by providing a wealth of instant information and eliminating costly textbooks that date quickly. These are clear benefits for students, but there are also risks

associated with a digital classroom. Device theft is on the rise, some students are becoming targets of crime, and devices can act as portals for access to personal, confidential or inappropriate content. There is a burgeoning demand from schools to protect data, control device use and help protect pupils. Through our partnership with Douglas Stewart EDU, Absolute's Computrace addresses these risks in this mobile environment.”

Free software

Following the announcement by Autodesk in October 2014 of free software to students, educators and educational institutions, the company will have a significant presence at the show. Autodesk will be featured on many stands showcasing the innovative work that students have produced using professional Autodesk 3D design software and learning resources over the past year. Autodesk will also be heavily represented on the Douglas Stewart stand where you will be able to get all of the latest information about the ground breaking projects Autodesk is working on in the coming months. Autodesk Education will also have its own stand which is shared between VEX Robotics and Rapid Electronics. On this stand will be demonstrations of how to incorporate free Autodesk design software and VEX robotics into your everyday Design & Technology Lessons and how it maps to the curriculum. There will be seminars/workshops throughout the day, covering topics such as: 3D Printing in the Classroom, Cloud Based CAD in Schools, Robotics on the

Curriculum as well as workshops involving Autodesk’s creative applications on iPads showing how tablets can be used effectively in Design & Technology lessons. There will also be features on students’ work, including the record breaking work of Team Colossus at the F1 in Schools final in Abu Dhabi who used professional Autodesk software to design their winning car. Hear their story along with many more inspirational speakers, examples of great student work and industry experts to get you inspired for bringing technology into the classroom. A recent survey from Capita SIMS has revealed that the vast majority of schools are either unprepared (25 per cent) or have started preparations, but not finalised plans for replacing the national curriculum levels (53 per cent). The company (stand B260) will be showcasing its own ‘no levels’ solution at Bett 2015. SIMS Assessment will allow those schools opting to follow alternatives to national curriculum levels to record achievement and track pupil progress against the new national curriculum programmes of study effectively.

SIMS Assessment will display the learning goals – or knowledge descriptors – for all core and foundation subjects, such as whether a student can discuss different types of poetry in English or has learnt to spell common exception words. They show teachers whether each student is emerging, developing, secure or has mastered a skill in a simple traffic light display. This allows schools to spot if a child is progressing or not, no matter what assessment system they follow.
