ne of the main problems of a young industry is the lack of skilled professionals. The sector is vibrant and exciting, despite


its challenges, so it would seem obvious that there must be a plethora of young talent out there waiting to make their mark. However, there’s no substitution for on the job experience but, until we consolidate the advances in the renewables sector, the search for the right personnel will always be a challenge.


But this is not to say the best candidates aren’t out there. From design engineers and installers to project managers, business developers and managers, there are many people who are bringing their vision and knowhow to the sector – they just need to portray themselves in the right way to the right companies to make themselves the perfect candidate for the job on offer. And this goes for the companies too.

fair to say most businesses have struggled to recruit the right people with the right experience. These days choosing a job is as much about the company ethos and experience as well as about the work involved. Not everyone though can afford or attract the best talent in the sector, which is


why making use of recruitment expertise can be the shortest way to the best candidate. In many ways it’s like dating – you need to find the right match, or the one that closest fits your ideals. So you have to set your stall out and make your company attractive, as the culture is always something we are asked about by candidates. Be as competitive as you can with the package as people do shop around and check out the competition. Even though it’s not always about the money, it’s a huge factor whatever they might say. In fact, you may have to pay more than you would


like, but if you get the right person there’s a happy ending. And don’t forget to sell yourself.


It’s not


all about them; it’s about you too. Everyone wants to be wanted, so work hard to convince them that you’re the right company for them. The best candidates will always have a choice, so make sure you are top of the list. You need to attract them, engage with them, sell to them, and expect them to do the same in return. Along the way, be sure to look after your


employees well. The skills shortage means that demand for most roles exceeds the number of qualified candidates out there so you don’t want them jumping ship at the slightest opportunity. Your reputation will go before you and in a relatively small industry word gets out. And don’t forget to look outside your catchment area. Most professionals have transferrable skills and there is a huge talent pool in related HVAC sectors. With a little training most of them could make the move into the progressive industry of the future, whether it’s a project manager, a design engineer or a sales person. The right skills make the right candidate, and with a little training they can develop new skills in an exciting and vibrant sector. At the end of the day, it’s all about people. With the right professionals on board your business will flourish. Just remember to give them the confidence that you can provide the opportunities they are seeking and that they can thrive in your company. The right salary package will attract both experienced people and graduates alike, but most of all remember that a young industry is an exciting industry – the most attractive proposition of all.
