Pig slurry provides the power to Leicestershire farm
P
ig slurry has traditionally been used as a fertiliser for arable land, but more and more farms are looking at using it in AD plants.
In Leicestershire a pig farm has completed a two-year installation project and is now sending 1 MW to the grid and 0.2 MW to power the farm - a total generation of 1.2MW.
Key to the success of this project has been the sophisticated electrical designs from I.C.Electrical, experienced electrical contractors and control engineers in the process industry, who have recognised the growth in the renewables market. Over the last five years they have been involved in a number of biomass, biogas, anaerobic digestion and material recycling facility plants around the country.
Design and collaboration were key components for this successful installation, says Andy Gadsby, Quality and Sales Manager of I.C.Electrical
For this project I.C.Electrical undertook the liaison with the process design company on behalf of the farmer. They also carried out the design and installation of the low voltage mains and control cabling, along with the high voltage cabling to the ring main unit that also included the specification and supply of the transformer.
The main motor control centre/PLC control panel (MCC/PLC) was also designed by I.C.Electrical, while the PLC automation software design and implementation was carried out using a working partner of the company. Collaboration was the key to complete these disciplines. I.C.Electrical Ltd interfaced with other plant package suppliers including Uniflare, Edina, Triolet, Vogelsang and Brewchem in order to integrate these into the overall package.
The client was delighted with the outcome as it means the farm now does not have to buy electricity and it also has additional income by supplying the grid. I.C.Electrical were delighted to be part of this project as it allowed the company to demonstrate its capabilities. It has also undertaken various process jobs for multi- national companies such as BP, Nestle, Unilever and Weetabix.
