CASELA NATURE & LEISURE PARK BY NICKI GRIHAULT
“I first visited Casela a decade ago and have seen it develop from a sanctuary for rare birds into Mauritius’s most popular eco-attraction. Open daily, it has 1500 animals spread across 14 hectares, ranging from flamingos to monkeys and giant tortoises, and a well-priced restaurant with a west coast view.
Wildlife experiences range from encounters with zebra and emu from the safety of a truck to walking with white lions ‘in the wild’, and giraffe feeding and elephant back rides are planned for 2015.
Casela caters for tots with a petting farm, tiliapia fishing, playground to teenagers with the widest range of adventure activities on the island. These include the longest zipline in
the Indian Ocean a Via Ferrata with hiking, rock climbing and cable bridges, and the newest thrill – a 45m canyon swing, described as ‘a bungee crossed with a slingshot’. It’s just a pity I’m afraid of heights. (
