“Having visited the resort and city of Cancún several times, I instead decided to spend a few days visiting other parts of the Mexican Caribbean, starting with the glorious island of Isla Mujeres. A short boat ride from Puerto Juárez, north of Cancún, this little gem of an island is popular with day- trippers, but I opted to stay on a few days to soak up the laid-back atmosphere, try out the snorkelling in El Garrafón Natural Park and munch some fresh fish dishes. Returning to the mainland, I continued south to the Maya ruins of Tulúm. These pre-Columbian ruins are now part of a national park in a stunning location, right by the turquoise sea – it’s easy to see why the Maya chose to stay here. Continuing south, towards Belize, quiet hideaways line the coast, while inland more ancient ruins dot the landscape. After a few days exploring, I simply settled down by the beach to investigate the tamarind and hibiscus margaritas – it’s thirsty work is sight-seeing!”
