The best of UK regeneration was celebrated at an awards cer- emony last night, hosted by broadcaster Clare Balding. Lord Heseltine picked up the biggest gong of the night at the
inaugural MIPIM UK Awards – the Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Urban Regeneration. Estates Gazette editor Damian Wild said: “Lord Heseltine has
been called many things over his long and impactful career. The daddy of urban regeneration, the brightest government minis- ter of the last 40 years. He has, to corrupt a phrase, been the lord of the urban jungle.” Other winners on the night included:
l The 2014 Commonwealth Games venues for regeneration project of the year l Sue Bruce, chief executive of Edinburgh city council, for her work to transform the fortunes of the Scottish capital l Get London Living for PRS project of the year l The Earls Court Masterplan for future project of the year l The Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership for public-private part- nership of the year l Croydon council was named planning authority of the year l Five Brindley Place for regional deal of the year. Estates Gazette introduced a new-style award to the event, The Disruptors Award, in recognition of those companies that are shaking up the property world. Lidl picked up the award for its effect on the grocery market and massive growth plans for the UK. The budget supermarket chain arrived in the UK 20 years ago, but has more than 600 stores and is heading towards a target of 1,500. The final award of the evening – City of the Year – went to Manchester, which has ridden the recession better than any of its regional rivals, with take up and rents both rising. WATCH THECEREMONY AT

Speaking about the benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to business, Prince Edward also took the opportunity to quip that he was a landlord with a “very nice” central London property and was always on the look out for occupiers.
