ALL ABOUT YOU — LETTERS

We fly long-haul Response to letter ‘Fly from the north’ (Travel Weekly, October 9) Last year, Thomas Cook Airlines, working with Caribbean tourist boards, launched a successful range of flights to the Caribbean from Manchester, and worked with Flybe on feeder flights from across the UK. To add to this, we’ve recently opened sales for our new three-times-a-week service to New York and twice-weekly service to Miami from Manchester (the only flights to Miami from outside London). Both start in May 2015 and feature our recently- announced new Economy and Premium services, comparable to the best scheduled airlines for the discerning traveller. Manchester – and the trade – does have an airline growing its long-haul flight- only programme. l Christoph Debus, chief executive, Thomas Cook Airlines

Heathrow Express Story: Heathrow Express cuts prices Perfect example of the benefits of competition. I’ve been taking the Heathrow Express for the past 10 years and seen the price increase and increase. It’s a great service but very expensive for a 15-minute ride. Bring on Crossrail! l Andrew Wong

Credit to Collette What a great surprise in our post this week – a commission cheque from Collette for a booking that had been made direct. Collette had asked the customer where they had picked up the brochure and forwarded us the commission. Thank you, Collette, for your continued support.

l Heidi Benham, manager, Winchester Travel Service

Let’s set Ukip policy Opinion: Party conferences are one thing, commitments are another Does anyone know the Ukip policy on transport and aviation? After last night’s result [Ukip’s win in the Clacton byelection], we may need as an industry to widen our horizons. Since I suspect they have no policy, maybe we should write one for them. l Alan Bowen

Ebola screen test Story: Government U-turn on Ebola screening Ask questions? Person screening: “Do you have Ebola?” Passenger: “No”. Person screening: “OK, on you go.” I know I’m a prophet of doom, but it’s difficult to see any light at the end of this tunnel. l Oracle

Monarch’s future Analysis: Monarch on runway to restructure

LETTERS OF THE WEEK

“Everyone is upbeat”, says a [Monarch] spokeswoman. Not the ones losing their jobs. Monarch could easily have avoided compulsory redundancies by cutting the fleet to 35 by losing the B757s and A330s. Given the uncertainty of the future, plenty of staff will be looking to leave now over the medium term. Cutting the fleet to 30 is a sure sign of trauma and there is no chance of Monarch competing with easyJet with this few planes. l Jax

Such a pity Monarch ever allowed itself to get into this situation. The blame should be attributed to those at the top. While other airlines were buying more planes, adapting to the new scheduled market and opening bases all over Europe, Monarch continued to fly a mixed older fleet based solely in the UK. I wonder if Greybull are coming in with long-term aspirations or for short-term gain (Comet Electrical springs to mind)? l Harry Cole
