Socitm 2014 to focus on ‘Digital: Vision to Value’

This year’s Socitm Annual Conference will examine the need to “construct” and “realise” a compelling vision for online public services.

During the two-day show in Manchester, leading politicians, industry experts and local practitioners will help ICT professionals from across the public sector take on the challenge of designing and articulating the value of a deeper digital presence.

The event, running from 21-22 October 2014 at Manchester United Football Club, Old Trafford, will see Chi Onwurah MP, shadow cabinet office minister, deliver the keynote speech, looking at how technology can help drive efficient and effective services while empowering citizens.

With a conference theme of

‘Digital: Vision to Value’ all members of the public sector community will benefit from debates on a variety of topics.

Socitm says the focus will be on world class digital services in stimulating the economy, open data and how to extract value from it, balancing business benefits and compliance requirements, and what the government’s role is in supporting local public services through digital transformation.

Tony Singleton OBE, director of digital commercial programme at the Government Digital Service (GDS), Cabinet Office, will also discuss how the GDS is bringing about “lasting change” in the way that government and the wider public sector thinks about, and

buys, digital and technology.

Delegates will also find out how G-Cloud and the Digital Services framework can help make it easy for them to transform their business.

A panel discussion featuring Ste- ven Clift, White House Champion of Change for Open Government and executive director at E-De- mocracy.org; Mandeep Hothi, senior programme manager – In- novation Lab at Nesta; and Mark Thompson, senior lecturer in in- formation systems at Cambridge Judge Business School, will ex- amine the forward-thinking topic of “leadership, vision and ambi- tion for the digital age”.

At the end of the first day of the conference the Socitm 2014 annual awards will also

take place, recognising the achievements of leading local public services. Award categories include the Digital Engagement Award; Best ICT Service of the Year; Innovation Award; and the Best Council Website of the Year.

Socitm’s chief executive Adrian Hancock told PSE: “Socitm’s Annual Conference is our flagship event and we are looking forward to welcoming public, third and private sector colleagues to Manchester for a stimulating combination of information- sharing, networking and, in the case of our Awards Dinner, entertainment.”

PSE will be attending the conference and reporting back in our following edition.
