PROJECT MANAGEMENT Deliver
outcomes, not just projects
Effective project management is about delivering tangible business benefit, not just completing a project to scope, time and budget, argues Jonathan Whelan, who has 25 years’ experience in change management roles.
In
today’s society, change is imperative. Organisations aspire to the goals of
improving service, delivering new propositions, complying with increasing regulation, reducing costs and becoming more efficient – and these all necessitate some degree of change. Investment in change requires a maximum return on that investment. Not everyone likes change; but like death and taxes, change is inevitable and non-negotiable.
The ability to embrace change, and to see it not just as an inevitability but as an opportunity, is a key ingredient to sustainable success.
For change to be made effectively and efficiently, it needs to be managed well. Too often projects get caught up in what they are doing and how they are doing it, losing sight
of why they are doing it. They get confused between doing things right and doing the right things. Still, too many projects fail to meet their objectives. It’s not just about delivering the change, it’s about realising the goals.
Projects are opportunities that must be grasped. Stakeholders need to work in partnership to realise the intended outcomes, after all it’s for their mutual benefit. Projects should be built on a common understanding, a common purpose and shared goals – and never losing sight of the goals.
