Editor’s Note W

SEPTEMBER 2014

elcome to September’s edition of Lawyer Monthly, where we’ll be taking a look at many of

the key stories that have been gracing the world’s legal news page over the last few weeks.

Last week the money markets and politicians breathed a collective sigh of relief when the people of Scotland voted ‘No Thanks’ to independence, and with that the United Kingdom remains united. There can be no doubt that the referendum was a huge boost for the democratic process and it’s certainly something that all those involved can be proud of.

Although the markets welcomed the news of a United Kingdom they still remain uneasy about the continued friction between the EU/Ukraine and Russia. Although thankfully the ceasefire does appear to be holding - the tit-for-tat sanctions and political posturing continue unabated. All of this adds to volatility in the oil and gas sector and now the EU is looking inwards for alternative energy sources to decrease their reliance on Russian gas. Whilst at the same time Russia looks east to China as an alternative energy partner. We have much more on this story inside with expert comment from law firm Morgan Lewis.

As usual, we also have several features for you this month, including an exclusive article from EIP and the potential European trademark dispute involving Nissan Cars and the world famous SPA race track.

As always, I hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Lawyer Monthly, and I look forward to bringing you more news and insight next month.
