US plastic machinery sales ahead in 2014

Sales of US plastic machinery has continued to rise this year, following a recovery towards the end of 2013.

Shipments of primary

plastics equipment (including extrusion equipment) for reporting companies totalled just under $300 million in the second quarter of this year, according to the Society for the Plastics Industry (SPI). This was almost identical to

the result from the first quarter of the year, but a 10% improve- ment on Q2 of 2013. For the year to date, the total value of primary equipment shipments is 10% ahead of last year. The SPI’s Committee on Equipment Statistics (CES) said that Q2 sales of single- screw extruders slipped 2% compared to the same period last year, but twin-screw extruders (including both co-rotating and counter-rotat- ing machines) jumped by 63%. In comparison, injection moulding was up 9%, blow

moulding down 2% and ancillary equipment up 21% to a record $108m. “Manufacturers that

anticipated strong demand, and allocated resources accord- ingly, are being richly rewarded for their efforts in 2014 – espe- cially in North America,” said Bill Wood, the plastics market economist who analyses and reports on the plastics machinery market sector for the CES. “Those companies that hired new workers,

increased production capacity or invested in inventories are reaping large returns on those investments this year.” CES also conducts a

quarterly survey of plastics machinery suppliers that asks about present market condi- tions and expectations for the future.
