machinery feature | Extruder developments

KraussMaffei Berstorff’s Eco- Line microwave channels have helped Trelleborg reduce energy costs

offer high throughput rates with optimal melt homoge- neity and low melt temperatures. In the Tien Phong line, a SolEx 120 is integrated, which manages an output of up to 2,200kg/h with only modest space requirements. The Helix 2000 VSI-T+ pipe die also minimises space

requirements, and its active intensive melt cooling acts in addition to an internal cooling system. Its two-step distribution concept, consisting of a spiral mandrel distributor and a lattice basket, guarantees maximum distribution, homogenisation and throughput with low pressure build-up.

Zephyr evolution Tecnomatic says that its Zephyr extruders have evolved from Zeus gearless extruders and the Vega 37 L/D series to set new standards in pipe extrusion. The new extruder series in L/D 40 offers a number of

innovative solutions to distinguish it in the market, says Tecnomatic. The main point behind the development was to increase the output rate at lower melt tempera- tures and power consumption. This has been achieved by adopting a spiral grooved feed bush and further improving screw design. The new feed bush ensures minimal friction – which is commonly generated by raw material transport – and a subsequent increase in specific and total throughput. The redesigned screw, with optimisation and enhancement of torque and shearing elements, has

improved the output allowed material to be processed at lower melt temperatures (below 200°C with extruder Zephyr 60.40 at 800 kg/h). To complete the configuration and meet the require-

ments for production efficiency, the machines are equipped with torque or water-cooled motors (in this case with one- or two-step gearboxes) and compact water-cooled inverters. These designs, combined with the mechanical

features, ensure efficient power consumption (lower than 170Wh/kg for Zephyr 60.40 at 800 kg/h, for example), low noise operation (less than 74Db), reduced workload for maintenance, higher efficiency within wide speed and load ranges and faster dynamic response, says the company.

The equipment also includes modules for a constant

monitoring of power consumption and production cost calculation. Zephyr extruders are offered in four screw diam- eters, with a maximum output of 1,700kg/h.
