MUSEUM PUTS TYPE CASTINGS TO WORK

Founded in Portland, Ore., in 2009, the C.C. Stern Type Foundry’s Museum of Metal Typography is a working museum focused on metal type and casting equipment. The organization owns one of the largest

collections of monotype casting matrices in the U.S. It aims to preserve the heritage of America’s typecasting industry while educating the public about its continued infl uence in contemporary design.

The exhibit shown here is the Monotype “Model OA” Sorts Caster, which went into production in the early 20th century. Dubbed “Orphan Annie,” the machine casts metal type for a single “sort,” or one size of one character of one typeface. 
