IMA Honors Magnesium Casters T e International Magnesium

Association (IMA), Wauconda, Ill., recognized advances in magnesium tech- nology, products and processes in the 2014 Awards of Excellence and Inter- national Environmental Responsibility Award competition in June. T e winners

demonstrated outstanding examples in design, process and application. T e Award of Excellence in the Design-Cast Product Automotive Cat- egory was presented to Georg Fischer GmbH & Co KG in Altenmarkt, Aus- tria, for an oil conduit module used in

Need High Quality Near-Net-Shape Castings In Small Quantities?

St.Louis Precision Casting Company Can Save You Time & Money!

We excel as a niche short-run foundry operation producing complex patterns, core boxes, permanent molds, dies and prototype components ranging in weight from a few pounds to 1800 pounds. Section sizes from 1/4 in.

Specialty metals poured include alloy steels, stainless steels, tool steels, nickel and cobalt based alloys and all types of Meehanite gray and ductile irons.

We deliver consistently sound, dimensionally accurate castings that live up to the most demanding expectations. Near-net shape castings require fewer cuts, machine faster and lower your costs.

the powertrain of the Porsche Panamera. T e part made using the magnesium high-pressure die casting process was developed with partner GF Automotive AG in Schaff hausen, Switzerland. T e Award of Excellence in the Design-Cast Product Commercial Cat- egory was presented to Christie Digital Systems in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, for a light engine enclosure used in a projector. T e enclosure, which was originally a two-part component made using the T ixomold process, was rede- signed as one diecast magnesium part. Changing the design yielded a number of improvements and benefi ts, including a 40% reduction in cost, im- proved dimensional accuracy and weight savings, according to Rob Malarky, en- gineering project manager for Chicago White Metal Casting Inc., Bensenville, Ill. T e 40% cost reduction was achieved by eliminating the purchase of a second casting, die trim, machining and dowel pin insertions. T e redesigned compo- nent went from a 2.5-lb., two-piece as- sembly to a 2.3-lb., one-piece diecasting, achieving an 8% weight reduction. T e 2014 Environmental Re-

sponsibility Award was presented to RIMA Industrial SA, Primary Magnesium Production Process. T e study concluded the carbon footprint of RIMA’s entire primary magnesium process is better than the worldwide average of aluminum plants and in a range of 39% to 57% of the carbon footprint of other primary magne- sium producers. 

$1.5 million (U.S.) in the expansion of its facility in Chicoutimi, Quebec. T e company added a new Palmer sand mixer and relocated its lab. T is investment will add 35% more capac- ity and improve the Nopatech mold machining cell that now operates on multiple setups, speeding the process. Four section of molds can be ma- chined without human intervention, for quick-turn prototypes and short run castings.
