innovations CASTING

What began as an eight-piece

assembly was cast as a single part at Urick Foundry. T e fi nal casting reduced costs by 43% and reduced downtime by integrating the guard into the component. T e casting also provided additional protection for the bearing housing with an additional ¼-in. coverage on each side. In the fi eld, the bearing housing can face se- vere abrasion and impact damage from rocks and debris. T e integrated guard acts as a shield for the bearing and its housing, which improves longev- ity, decreases work interruptions and reduces operating costs associated with parts and labor. “If you go from multiple pieces

welded to one casting, you’re able to eliminate part numbers,” said Vasko Popovski, sales and marketing direc- tor, Applied Process. “Mechanically inclined farmers also appreciate the simplicity of a single cast part versus a complex weldment.” 

Redesigning the casting provided an additional half-inch of coverage for the housing.
