The factory of the future and the vision of efficiency
ASM Assembly Systems has recently acquired printing specialist DEK. To find out what this means for the companies Electronics attended a press conference at the Siemens’ Electronics Works Amberg plant, where all was revealed with a closer insight into the “factory of the future” or “Industry 4.0”

(EWA), ASM Assembly Systems announced the completion of its DEK acquisition. During the event ASM Pacific Technology (ASMPT) outlined its plans for the future. The Printing Solutions Division (DEK) and the Placement Solutions Division (SIPLACE) will now form ASMPT’s new SMT Solutions segment. Günter Lauber, the former head of the SIPLACE team and now the CEO of SMT Solutions, will continue to drive ASMPT’s growth strategy in markets outside of the classic backend business.
DEK AND SIPLACE COMBINED In panel discussions at the press conference, Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Büttner (Head of Siemens’ Electronics Works Amberg plant), Günter Lauber (CEO ASMPT SMT Solutions), Günter Schindler (Head of the Placement Solutions Division) and Michael Brianda (Head of the Printing Solutions Division) discussed the objectives and requirements for highly flexible and efficient Industry 4.0 concepts in electronics production as well as potential solutions. During the discussion, Lauber
highlighted, that, customers will still be able to combine DEK and SIPLACE solutions with printing and placement solutions from other suppliers. Lauber is also working to realise his
vision of how electronics manufacturing processes can be improved: “I have always believed that the perfect SMT solution for our customers would comprise more than just placement machines and the right software. Equipment makers and electronics producers know that the improved integration of printers, inspection system

and placement machines, i.e. the early stage of the SMT process chain, harbors huge improvement potential,” said Lauber. Accordingly, the company plans to set
up joint projects for developing integrated solutions, which Lauber believes will produce new growth impulses and competitive benefits. “It is for good reason that we are at
Siemens EWA in Amberg. This is one of the most advanced manufacturing plants in the world. Electronics producers like Siemens and equipment manufacturers like ASMPT SMT Solutions believe that further integration harbors huge potentials. We want to deliver these improvements in efficiency and process reliability by offering a new generation of SMT solutions that effectively integrate the printing, inspection and placement processes,” said Lauber. “We will keep the successful DEK brand
so that the DEK team can continue to go full speed ahead with its current people, processes and organisation”, Lauber continued.
THE SMART FACTORY: INDUSTRY 4.0 Günter Schindler, Head of the Placement Solutions Division advises the plans for ASM Assembly Systems are to expand its existing offerings in the areas of production scheduling and control, material logistics, setup processes, assembly automation and process
integration and increasingly integrate these solutions. Schindler, points out, “even deploying these solutions individually on the production floor will generate significant improvements in efficiency, quality and flexibility. By integrating them, on the other hand, ASM Assembly Systems will enable its customers to implement state-of-the- art production concepts like “Industry 4.0” or “Smart Factory” over the medium to long term. “Whether the user needs scheduling
software, non-stop setup changeovers, intelligent material logistics with short travel paths on the factory floor or automated placement program switch overs via PCB barcodes – we already offer many intelligent solutions that directly affect the producer’s efficiency, quality and flexibility and quickly pay for themselves, explained Schindler. “At the same time, our software
engineers are working hard to integrate the processes and solutions ever more tightly in order to create the foundation for Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory applications, ” Schindler added.
