TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION
e are all familiar with the types of connectors used to transfer hi speed data in our everyday lives, whether we take notice of them or not. Your tablet, camera, and mobile phone, the connectors you plug in daily to re- charge them, the telephone jack in the wall, the list is endless.
Luso’s
modular C-band to KA-band VSAT antennas
L
uso Microwave, an operating division of Luso Electronics that manufactures and installs
microwave systems and components for commercial and military satellite markets, has announced a new family of modular C–band to KA-band antennas in a range of reflector sizes from 1.2m to 4.2m. The modular design reduces installation time, cut costs and adds flexibility to microwave satellite networks, including making KA band installations financially viable for cost-sensitive commercial applications. KA band usage is growing due to problems with spectrum overload in other bands. Furthermore, a 1.8 metre diameter KA band dish offers comparable performance to a 4.2 meter KU band antenna. The much smaller antennas and waveguides simplify transportation, handling and installation. Luso will deliver the antennas from stock.

High Speed data connectors for the military W

Although these familiar connector designs are adequate for a relatively benign environment, they do not offer the ruggedness essential for the totally demanding military environment.
The current response to this requirement has been to package the standard commercial connector in a rugged military-proven housing. This solution whilst functional does not allow for manufacturers to reduce the size and weight of their equipment, a common demand from the end user.
connection? Above all, it is the know-how for details!
What turns a connector The
choice of the insulation
high-speed body
material demands special attention. The plastic must be co-ordinated to the hard environmental conditions, and also to sensitive high frequency parameters such as a frequency-stable dielectric constant or a low dielectric dissipation factor. Skilled contact arrangement and design and the addition of compensation regions can optimize a connection to the point that it is possible to transmit data rates of up to 10 Gbit/s.

Proving and Improving the Supply Chain for High-Reliability Components
quipment manufacturers serving all markets for electronic products are continuously improving their supply chains to ensure consistent supply of components meeting all applicable conformance and quality specifications. In the military and aerospace industries, such assurances are even more important. The AS9100 and AS9120 quality standards,
E for equipment/service
producers and stockists/distributors respectively, provide a framework for these assurances within the aerospace
industry. Solid State Supplies is certified to AS9120 as a distributor and also to AS9100 as a provider of value-added services such as device programming. AS9100/9120 certification measures key performance indicators, such as on-time delivery rates and adherence to promised standards of service. Continuous improvement is required. AS9120, in particular, covers aspects such as the chain of custody for components, traceability and stock control. This enables Solid State Supplies to provide the ultimate assurance that all components are genuine and meet the published specifications, and carry all necessary documentation including certificates of conformity, test reports and manufacturer warranties. Today’s most important military and aerospace industry specifications include MIL-STD-750D test
methods for semiconductor devices, and MIL-PRF-19500 screening and quality conformance inspection requirements. MIL-PRF-19500 references Joint Army-Navy (JAN) reliability categories, which specify several levels of screening from JAN, JANTX and JANTXV to JANS (Joint Army-Navy-Space) and JANSR. Solid State Supplies holds stocks of MIL-STD-750 and MIL-PRF-19500 including JANS components, as part of its extensive high-reliability portfolio that includes standard and custom ICs, modules and discretes from leading manufacturers such as International Rectifier and Microsemi. Components are available in formats such as bare die, or in high-reliability hermetic or non-hermetic packages, as well as custom devices and radiation-hardened (rad hard) components. A comprehensive choice of functions, including SoCs, DC-DC converters, voltage regulators, solid-state relays, Zener and Schottky diodes, IGBTs and MOSFETs makes Solid State Supplies the preferred supplier to many customers in the military, aerospace and space sectors, and also for medical, transportation and industrial applications.

New Amphenol connectors
for military vehicles depend on integrated EMC filters made by MPE
A mphenol, military, one of the world’s largest
manufacturers of interconnect products for the commercial aerospace and industrial
markets, approached MPE Ltd of Liverpool last year with a view to developing a ground-breaking range of connectors with integrated EMC filtering. So, in conjunction with Amphenol, MPE has produced the Rhino range of filtered connectors to deliver a high level of EMC suppression performance, yet in a footprint that can be used within very tight physical constraints.
Amphenol had identified a distinct trend towards increased power and voltage requirements on such applications as military and electric drive vehicles, aircraft and communications base stations.
