Energy efficiency EU puts energy high on to-do list

It is estimated that a 10 per cent decrease in energy use could lead to a 1.5 per cent increase in net operating income (NOI) — with even more impres- sive figures as the energy savings grow. When we add to it the ener- gy-focused regulatory environ- ment in Europe, no wonder that energy efficiency has made its way to the top of many to-do lists. The European Union 20/20/20
targets aiming to reduce green- house gas emissions by 20 per cent, energy consumption by 20 per cent and increase renewables by 20 per cent by the year 2020 are just a few years away and there is already a discussion to make the targets even more ambitious. Existing directives like the
Energy Performance of Buildings directive are being revised. The Energy Efficiency Directive is also going to be looked upon. And while the energy efficiency of commercial buildings has improved over the last several decades, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry has only scratched the surface when it comes to squeez- ing the energy waste out of under- performing buildings. It is clear building owners and managers want their facilities to be the best in terms of comfort, performance, efficiency and sustainability. They demand improved efficiency choices with the right level of return on investment at the bottom line. Today, more than before, they also face acoustic challenges
as urban areas are growing and expanding often to commercial and sometimes industrial areas cre- ating the need for the HVAC sys- tems to be as silent as possible. While they might be intimidated by the task of cutting energy costs and the number of different regu- lations and requirements to com- ply with, with the support of HVAC industry partners, they can adopt high performance building technologies to improve energy and acoustic efficiency in both new and existing buildings.
