Brent Civic Centre

The Brent Civic Centre opposite Wembley Stadium was the first project in which Marflow Hydronics was able to use a substantial amount of electronic balancing, says Martin. Initially the project developer for the Brent Civic Centre was challenged to come up with the highest BREEAM rating for the

building. This would make Brent Civic Centre the first government building to achieve this rating.

All the trench heating at the centre uses Marflow Hydronics’ dynamic valves so they can electronically measure the flow and temperature to every single terminal unit in that building. There are a total of 267 terminal units in the building which gives them the opportunity to measure energy throughout the building. “Once upon a time you’d know that building was using a lot of energy but not where it was going. With little heat meters on every single terminal, this changes things.

“This project is littered with really good energy saving concepts and ideas,” says Martin, and it joins an elite group of one of the world’s most sustainable projects.

design engineering, sales and also marketing which Martin considers to be “one of the most important parts of what we do now”.

The future “We have looked at fan coil and the way fan coil units were put together and the way systems were being designed for fan coil units and we came up with some ideas that changed the way valve sets were traditionally installed. What we hope to do now is move onto heat interface units,” Martin explains.

“What we would like to do is look at what application are they being used for, and see if can we come up with a better applica-

tion for it. This is a big potential area for putting product into a project and looking at it from a different angle.”

“Not many people have the knowledge of water distribution systems that we have. Often someone will come up with a design or an idea but if something fails its because they didn’t understand the fuller picture of why projects fail.

“I think the future is for us to redesign some of these systems to know exactly what the compo- nents are doing.” “I believe Marflow Hydronics is in a better place than most to perfect these systems.” www.marflowhydronics.co.uk

A Marflow Hydronics factfile

* Marflow Hydronics is based in Birmingham on a 1000m2 site employing 22 staff members.

* The company is an agent of the Italian manufacturer Pettinaroli. * The group’s brass products are manufactured in Italy while valve assemblies are completed in the UK.

* Pettinaroli developed its Filterball product – a compact combined isolation valve and strainer unit – in the mid 1990s for which Marflow Hydronics became well known in the UK. * In 1996 the company developed another unique product in its Xterminator commissioning valves

* Pettinaroli/Marflow was amongst the first companies to supply prefabricated units.

* In 2007 Pettinaroli started to manufacture PICV valves. * In 2009 Marflow Hydronics developed its industry-changing 40mm bypass valve which was designed to greatly simplify the design and installation of fan coil systems.
