with snap-in terminals for easy PCB mounting AVX Corporation, a leading manufacturer of passive components and interconnect solutions, has launched the new FRC series medium power DC-link film capacitors, which feature a wide range of capacitance and voltage values in addition to self-healing properties. Designed for use in DC filter circuits, power supplies, industrial inverters, UPS systems, motor drives, power converters, and solar inverters, FRC series capacitors are comprised of dry, wound, metalized polypropylene film dielectric encased in a size A, self-extinguishing, cylindrical plastic case sealed with thermosetting resin and featuring four snap-in terminals that facilitate easy mounting to PCBs.
FRC series capacitors are available in nine voltages spanning 400V- 1500V, two tolerances (±5% and ±10%), two lead lengths (4mm and 8mm), and with capacitance values spanning 4.7µF to 35µF. Housed in size A cylindrical cases measuring 54mm (L) x 36mm (OD) x 5.1mm (P1), the RoHS-compliant series is rated for operating temperatures spanning -40°C to +105°C and exhibits long lifetime performance of 100,000 hours at rated voltage and 70°C.
Additionally, unlike aluminum electrolytic capacitors, FRC series polypropylene film capacitors do not have a catastrophic failure mode. Instead, these capacitors simply experience a parametric loss of capacitance of approximately 5% from their initial value, eliminating the risk of short circuit and enabling continued functionality. Lead time for the series is approximately eight weeks, depending on demand, quantity, and model chosen; precise lead times will be confirmed upon receipt of order.

FPGA or ASIC – that is the question
A FPGA is a user configurable device that employs a binary image file to implement the required functionality. Although some FPGAs include analogue blocks, they are mainly used for digital centric designs. An ASIC, on the other hand, is a custom designed integrated circuit that is dedicated for one particular application and can handle both digital and analogue functions. It is up to the designer to specify which type of device is most appropriate, but the wrong decision can make the difference between success and failure in the market place. ASICs are often thought to be expensive but, in many instances, they can be cost effective. The unit cost of a FPGA is constant whilst that of an ASIC reduces as the volume off-take increases. So the designer has to avoid common prejudices and generalisations and thoroughly investigate both device types. Solution providers will be happy to provide information and have tools and documents that will assist the process. Only when all the latest facts are available can the designer make the best selection for the product - and it may not be the one originally anticipated.

Hamamatsu new compact CMOS linear image sensor
Hamamatsu Photonics introduce a new compact CMOS linear image sensor; the S12443, designed for barcode readers, encoders, position detection and image reading applications. Designed for high volume quantities due to the plastic package, very low cost is achieved.
The S12443 boasts a 2496 pixel long photosensitive area in a package which is only 22.9 mm in length. Each pixel is vertically long at 7 x 125 um, with a total photosensitive area length of 17.472 mm.
CMOS image sensors have an ideal feature in low power consumption and, in the case of the S12443, it only requires a supply of 3.3 V. Due to a very small input terminal capacitance of only 5 pF, a high-speed data rate of 10 MHz is achieved. With the use of a built-in timing generator, operation is simply done with only start and clock pulse inputs.
Being a CMOS sensor, the S12443 is small in size and has more highly integrated signal processing circuits. This yields better cost efficiency and extends its applications in the industrial equipment field.
