TV host George Clarke conveys his passions for construction at CIOB dinner

TV presenter George Clarke was guest speaker at the
CIOB’s East of England Annual Gala Dinner in the summer at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge.
More than 200 built environment professionals heard Clarke highlight how architecture and construction can transform everyday lives. Clarke also set out his aims to
make careers in the field more popular and accessible to all and the need to drive up standards and quality for clients. He also delivered an emotional tribute to his grandfather whose funeral was held earlier that day. He credited his grandfather with fueling his passion for construction. of architectural practice George Clarke + Partners. He is also a writer,

Branch manager was delighted that Clarke shared his knowledge and experience of the industry with members. “His aims to improve the popularity and accessibility of the industry resonate heavily with our work as an Institute,” she said. “We seek to enhance the image of the industry, ensuring it’s not just portrayed as all about bricks and mortar and people in hard hats. We must work hard to ensure young people get a real opportunity to consider the built environment as a viable and rewarding career option.” The event was sponsored by
SDC construction group and Barnes Construction.

CIOB MEMBERS LEARN THE BUILDING MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES OF LONDON ZOO
CIOB Bedfordshire Centre member Paul Wilson FCIOB is an extremely knowledgeable Fellow of the Zoological Society of London and together with ZSL’s arts and inclusion manager, Steve Marriott, they enthralled a capacity crowd of CIOB guests at a bespoke Architecture & History Day at London Zoo in July. Wilson began with a talk on
the history of the zoo, touching on the planning and design process and describing each of the periods of change that have
taken place over nearly 200 years. The 36-acre site is home
to 14 Grade I and II listed buildings and while many of the original buildings are still
in use, many are no longer used for the same animals as originally intended. There have also been new additions to the park. The group were given a

tour to appreciate the range of architecture and fully understand how this complex project has been developed over time with the Georgian and Victorian buildings sitting alongside the additions of the 1930s, 1960s and the newest, the cutting edge Biodiversity and Conservation exhibit.
