view details for staff in their departments and can authorise holiday at the click of a button. In future the company plans to roll out Carval’s
T&A software. This will save time for all employees as well as HR and payroll, as manual timesheets will no longer be required. Hours will be automatically collected by the T&A system when staff clock in and out, which could be via the till for store based staff, with payroll being updated automatically. The system automatically logs hours worked and costs at branch, regional and head office level. Bernardinelli reported that a key technical
consideration in the company’s systems selection was the ability to link the Carval T&A module to its till logging system. An additional plug-in option is the Deployment Planner, which will assist store managers with forecasting staff requirements and costs. Self-service for both staff and managers has also
been introduced. This gives staff the ability to check their personal details, holiday entitlements and request holiday or leave. Managers are able to view details for staff in their departments and are able to authorise holiday at the click of a button. In addition the self-service functionality enables Thomas Sabo to manage recruitment, starter and leaver processes at branch level. Bernardinelli commented: “Carval HR Unity has
enabled the HR and payroll department at Thomas Sabo UK and Ireland to manage the continuing growth of employee numbers at the company without taking on extra headcount within the department. The system keeps all information in one place, so there are no anomalies between HR and Payroll data. HR Unity is intuitive and easy to use, saving us considerable time and enables us to manage all staff related elements of the business efficiently.”

now been implemented and are in use in the broadest sense of the term, apart from the T&A, which we are currently working on to see that in use as soon as possible.” Just as one company building an international
luxury brand is discovering the value of modern WFM systems, so diverse retail sectors at home are also realising the benefits of labour cost control and increased workforce productivity. Another has been targeting workforce key performance indicators [KPIs] as an important area of focus in an overarching project designed to change both culture and processes across the organisation. Last year UK hospitality operator, Hall &
Woodhouse, completed its roll out of a Kronos WFM system across 54 managed public houses and 1,500 team members. The Kronos investment was designed to accurately forecast required team member levels, optimise staff scheduling and improve payroll accuracy. The implementation is also part of a five- year transformation plan at Hall & Woodhouse to become the most highly regarded in the UK. In pursuit of that goal, Duncan Rouse, Hall
& Woodhouse operations support manager, told Retail T
echnology: “In order to achieve operational
excellence, we needed to ensure we were managing our labour effectively and meeting sales targets to support growth. Traditionally managers focused solely on labour percentages to plan workforces and demonstrate their operative abilities to the board, but this didn’t enable us to align resources with demand. “We realised we needed a solution that could
eliminate under and over-staffing, and ensure that we have enough people in the right areas to deliver the high levels of service expected from our
