One machine has it all The bridge-type measuring machine equipped with the XTR sensor provides KWS with numerous benefits: the company was able to achieve the desired accuracy of one micrometer. The new sensor also enables the measurement of almost all components of the different tools with just a few stylus configurations and an occasional change-out. The small- est stylus features a diameter of just 0.2 millimeters: "We were amazed at how accurate we can measure with this stylus. It is so small that you can hardly see it," said Hübner enthusiastically. It is more than just all the workpieces — from complex small parts up to 500 kilogram tool designs — that the two measuring technicians at KWS can now measure on a single machine.


The ZEISS ACCURA can capture all required dimensions — even radii, which required a contourograph in the past. This further increased accuracy because the results from a single measuring machine can more easily be compared than those from two or more different systems.


Taking responsibility Ever since KWS switched to ZEISS, there have been fewer questions and discussions with customers about the measured values because many of them use ZEISS measuring machines them- selves and trust the results. According to Hübner, the company "now has even more responsibility because customers often no longer check our work — and, of course, we do not want their production lines to shut down because one of our tools is not precise enough." Another change at KWS: the measurements in an external lab are now a thing of the past: "We now do everything here, just as it says in our philosophy."
