This Asian-tiger model that combines competition and openness to global economy with a good deal of governance, involves starting at the bottom of the international value chain — labour-intensive manufacturing —and gradually moving up. Modi has managed to achieve this as a chief minister of Gujarat, a large Indian state and now it has to be seen if he can mimic these tactics on a national level. A combination of his ideas with those of Raghuram Rajan, a widely respected University of Chicago economist, running the Reserve Bank of India, is expected to bring about the reforms.

In Japan, the Abe government released a revised Revitalization strategy that contained a few surprises, such as the reduction of corporate tax rate to below 30%, reassessment of the GPIF’s JGB- centric asset allocation, a new corporate governance to be created in mid-2015, promotion of foreign workers in construction, shipbuilding etc. and driving a robotic revolution, in addition to a proactive use of a new tax ID system. Overall, it has a positive direction.

France has proposed to give India a 1 billion euro ($1.4 billion) credit line to fund sustainable infrastructure and urban development projects, as per the statement of Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, during his recent visit to New Delhi in India. Earlier, Japan has been a key investor in the Delhi- Mumbai Industrial Corridor, a mega infrastructure project that envisages dozens of new industrial zones and cities sprouting alongside a 1,483- kilometre highway stretch between India’s biggest two cities (source: www.eco-business.com).
