BE THAT GUY
To avoid baggage charges the next time you fly, pull this trick at the gate. Instead of checking your bag at the ticket counter, lug it through security and drag it to the gate. TSA doesn’t care that the airline doesn’t allow more than two carry-on bags or that your giant suitcase won’t fit in the overhead bin. When you get to the gate, ask the attendant if you can gate-check your bag. Leave the bag on the jetway when you board the plane and pick it up when you arrive. You just saved $50!
PACK A PADDLE
Don’t leave home without your favorite paddle. Several paddle companies
produce high-quality, four-piece paddles that break down to fit in a suitcase. Or, duct tape your favorite beater paddle to your rod tube before you check in. At the ticket counter, smile, compliment the attendants and watch them pass the MacGyvered baggage through.
INSTANT FISHING KAYAK
Turn any sit-on-top kayak into a fishing kayak by bringing your own kayak seat. I bring a rigging kit that includes self-tapping screws, pad-eyes, a rivet gun, pop rivets and a multi-tool. I pack a high-quality kayak seat with two rod holders and a small gear bag. I can install the seat in almost any kayak to give me a comfortable ride and carry my fishing gear.
LOCKED OUT
I used to use a cable lock to secure my kayak to the roof of my car. When thieves attempted to steal my kayak
they unstrapped the boat but couldn’t get the kayak off the roof. So they dropped the 70-pounder on my car’s hood—the repairs cost more than the kayak was worth! Test any anti-theft system to be sure it is idiot-proof.
STRANGE BEDFELLOWS
Staying in a hotel on the seedy side of town? Skip the cable locks and parking under a streetlight. I take my kayak into my room with me. This is easier if you are on the ground floor, but chaining the kayak to a balcony is better than leaving it on the roof of the car.
LEARN THE LAWS
If possible, purchase a fishing license and permits before you leave. Check message boards and blogs and consult with local guides and tackle outfitters about catch restrictions, seasons and closed areas. Don’t spend your kayak fishing getaway in jail.
Dehydration is excess loss of body water with ac- companying disruption of metabolic processes. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 20 ounces of water before exercise. During exposure, they suggest drinking eight ounces of water every 15 minutes. Continue to hydrate after the fishing trip, too. Early signs of dehydration include fatigue, lightheadedness, appetite loss, dry mouth, dark urine, headache and profuse sweating. More severe symptoms include extreme thirst, lack of sweating, lit- tle or no urination, nausea, dizziness, muscle cramping and vision impairment. As an extra precaution, I carry a Lifestraw water filter in my dry bag. This system uses a mechanical filter to turn any fresh water into drinking water.
