[1] A large tank well in the stern will secure a big crate or livewell with bungees and straps. A new molded handle in the bow and the stern are low-profile with a solid grip. [2] The center hatch accommodates rods over seven feet long. New foot braces provide solid support and are easy to adjust on the go. COASTAL BOAT THAT CAN HANDLE THE WORST CONDITIONS. PHOTO: COURTESY WILDERNESS SYSTEMS

THE NEW WILDERNESS SYSTEMS THRESHER IS A CAPABLE

NEWER ISSUES $2.99

I climbed on the 140 and Alderman took the 155. Timing the breakers and charging the lull, I paddled the Thresher into open water with little trouble. When we hit the shoals, we found 70-de- gree water pushing up against 60-degree water at two knots and the wind blowing steady at 15. The Thresher handled the seas ef- fectively. The primary stability was responsive to the chaotic roll- ers while the secondary stability kicked in to keep me and the boat upright. With low gunwales and a recessed seat, the Thresher cut through the wind, too. The extreme conditions put the Thresher to the test. I beat

through the wind and current, while the boat absorbed the waves and stayed on track. Of course turning into a 20-knot headwind was difficult, and the boat lagged in two knots of current, but I wondered how she would handle in calmer conditions. Alderman found the same true with the 155. The Thresher is a coastal boat that is full of fishing features and

performs in rough water with plenty of space to pack a weekend’s worth of camping gear. While the boat isn’t going to break any speed records and a rudder would help with handling for a long haul to a distant fishing ground, the Thresher can’t be beat.
