COAL STILL DOMINANT IN UK BUT RENEWABLES ON THE UP D

espite being the biggest sources of UK energy production in

winter 2013-14, coal and gas saw a large fall in levels of power generation as levels of renewable generation increased from previous years, highlights a new report by energy data analyst, EnAppSys. Despite providing 57% of UK

power in the six months to March 2014, coal and gas plants saw levels of combined generation fall 17% on the same period in 2012-13. The decline was attributed to a

4.2GW fall in coal-fired capacity and rising levels of renewable generation, which reduced the need for gas-fired power during the period. The fall came as total electricity

generation at major GB power stations fell 6.2% to 36.9GW. This was attributed to a mild winter and a long-term decline in electricity consumption driven primarily by the economic slowdown and increased levels of energy efficiency. The EnAppSys study showed that coal-fired power stations provided

34% of all UK power requirements during winter 2013-14, while 23% came from combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) units. Nuclear units provided a further 21%, wind farms 10% and other sources, including interconnector flows to the UK, provided the remaining 15%. Paul Verrill, Director of EnAppSys,

said: “The report shows that the UK’s electricity needs are still predominantly provided by coal and gas-fired power stations, but that renewables are playing an increasingly larger role. In

GOLF AND SPA HOTEL GETS BMS OVERHAUL

Hellidon Lakes golf and spa hotel, which is part of the QHotels 21- strong chain of four-star UK hotels, has used the services of BG Energy Solutions to overhaul the dysfunctional BMS in its boiler house. The project has restored control over factors such as heating and air conditioning, and introduced new energy efficiencies into the business. Located near the village of

Hellidon, some 10km southeast of Daventry in Northamptonshire, the 106-bedroom, 24-meeting room

Hellidon Lakes hotel recently tackled a long-standing issue with its heating system. “We had a problem with the

controls in our boiler house to the extent that heating in some parts of the hotel was not working,” explains Steve Inwood, the recently appointed Maintenance Manager at the facility. To solve the situation BG Energy

Solutions was enlisted, spending three days on site at Hellidon Lakes overhauling the Trend BMS, which is meant to control heating and air

conditioning in areas of the hotel that include the main conference room, bar area, changing rooms and reception. “BG Energy Solutions had to start

at the BMS end of the system with the PC board and control panel, which feeds various valves and actuators – in fact one actuator had to be replaced,” explains Mr Inwood. “They also had to check the whole system via point-to-point recommissioning. BG Energy Solutions www.bgenergysolutions.co.uk

The new Paramount three range of high efficiency condensing boilers has been released by Baxi Commercial, using the very latest in heating technology. The range is suitable for a variety of applications and comes in six different outputs, including 30kW, 40kW, 60kW, 80kW, 95kW and 115kW, with new cascade options up to 460kW. All products also come with a

five year warranty. The boilers include an ultra-reliable heat exchanger with combustion system, which delivers exceptional energy efficiency, as well as an advanced ultra-low NOx performance, contributing towards specifications that exceed Part L2 requirements.

nergy efficiency has come a long way over recent years,

driven largely by our increasing recognition of it’s need and also facilitated by advancing technologies. The latest in energy efficiency will be on show at both the Energy Conference and Energy & Environment expo taking place this month with show previews featuring in this issue. Also in this issue we have a

focus on BMS, HVAC, Energy Management Software and Lighting & Controls, along with Consultancy Services and Renewables & Low Carbon Technology all paving the way for greater energy efficiency.

A new high-performance turbine oil has been formulated by ExxonMobil Fuels and Lubricants to help power operators increase the reliability and power output of their gas and steam turbines. In field trials and laboratory

testing, the Mobil DTE 732 M oil is claimed to have demonstrated the

ability to enhance system cleanliness, deliver thermal stability and minimise varnish formation, all of which are critical for turbine durability and performance. This oil is recommended for use in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) range of non-geared single shaft gas and steam turbines, and multi shaft gas turbines. REO UK has obtained a patent for the water cooling and encapsulation of chokes. Used in railway, renewable and regenerative applications, the new chokes improve size and efficiency, helping customers make further energy savings. Chokes, typically used with variable speed drives for smoothing, regulating and limiting current, provide greater control and reduced energy consumption in motor applications. The last few years have seen an

MARINE ENERGY TESTING FACILITY

Complex waves, fast currents and large water spikes will be created to mark the launch of a world-class testing facility for marine energy devices at the University of Edinburgh's science campus. The FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility, managed by University of Edinburgh subsidiary company, FloWave TT, can simulate scale version equivalents of waves up

to 28 metres high and currents of up to 14 knots, using 2.4 million litres of water.

Researchers and industrial partners

industry wide shift from air cooled to water cooled chokes, as a result of their increased longevity as well as lower operating temperatures and improved return on investment. In order to cater for the varied and demanding design and power requirements of its customers, REO has successfully obtained a patent on an improved method of water cooling and encapsulation, implemented in a range of chokes designed for various low and high power applications.

the winter period, when demand in the UK is at its peak, 18% of total UK generation came from renewable sources (including estimates for levels of embedded generation1), a big increase on the 11% figure the previous year. “We are also seeing increased levels of interconnector flows into Britain

from the continent. This has resulted in much lower levels of utilisation levels at gas plants, but has increased the levels of diversity in the UK fuel mix.” EnAppSys www.enappsys.com
