FEATURE RENEWABLES & LOW CARBON TECHNOLOGY HARNESSING THE POWER The objective of the program is to

promote research and development that will reduce the price of wind energy by 10% in the period 2010-2020. The company is also conducting research and development work with Siemens & Oxford University in order to drive down the costs of offshore wind to 100 Euros per MWh by 2020. I&C customers who wish to include renewables as part of their energy mix can fix the exact proportion, from 0 per cent to 100 per cent. This means that renewable power can be part of your energy mix, all of it, or none of it - depending on your organisation's objectives.

Mike Hogg, Managing Director of Renewable Power Sales at DONG Energy explores how, by transforming obligations into opportunities as part of the mix is offering some promising alternatives

P

ower shortages, blackouts, brownouts, rising energy costs,

insufficient network capacity; these are all terms that have become part of the common vernacular in recent months. Not since the 1970s has power been so central to public and political consciousness as it is now. The problem is far from simple and yet

it must be tackled. Part of the solution is through managing demand, reducing consumption and changing the way we think about energy. The good news is that businesses and consumers are increasingly encouraged and enabled to do just this, be it through regulation from the Department of Energy and Climate Change or commercial opportunities - which are partly about reducing energy but also about reducing operating costs. For energy-intensive companies, regular energy audits will become mandatory next year, enabling businesses to identify and implement measures that deliver meaningful efficiencies and impact energy consumption - as well as the bottom line. Whilst some organisations see the recent crop of legislation as an increased regulatory burden, smart businesses are turning to their suppliers for support as they know that, with access to the right expertise, energy efficiency translates

26 SUMMER 2014 | ENERGY MANAGEMENT

DONG Energy is committed to helping customers meet their renewable energy targets whilst balancing cost considerations

into just plain efficiency. By partnering with the right supplier, companies can identify the optimum supply contract that fits their risk appetite and internal competencies, and realise the long-term benefits of access to meaningful and actionable data and information.

FROM DEPENDENCY TO INNOVATION In the UK we have traditionally relied on fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas but as economic access to indigenous supplies of those resources reduce, it is crucial that we shift our dependency towards a mix that includes sustainable (or renewable) sources of energy; power and heat generated using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind (both onshore and offshore). In the UK, around 11% of power was generated by renewable sources in 2012. In the future, renewable energy sources must provide an even larger share of our energy supply. So far, DONG Energy has committed £5 billion to the UK energy infrastructure - to include offshore wind as well as oil & gas exploration - to support this transformation away from our sole reliance on fossil fuels. This includes participating in the UK Carbon Trust Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) program, which is co-funded by the UK Government.

GOOD CORPORATE CITIENSHIP As customers in B2B and B2C markets become more conscious and discerning, corporate citizenship and responsible sourcing are becoming ever-more crucial - and businesses need to demonstrate comprehensive policies, vigilant monitoring and flawless track records. Product origination is key to this in many

industries, which is why DONG Energy has incorporated this requirement into its power supply products. Renewable energy from the company is guaranteed to be wind generated, rather than nuclear, and is directly traceable to its UK wind farms. The company’s wind farms are issued

with Levy Exemption Certificates (LECs) and Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGOs) which come with a time and location signature which show where the energy was produced. So the solution is complex and multi-

stranded. However, at the heart is the simple truth that the best electron or gas molecule is the one you don’t use. All organisations rely on responsible and efficient use of resources - and this includes energy. Renewable sources are vitally important to our energy future, but perhaps even more so is our attitude to energy and the actions we take as a result. One thing is certain: there is no easy

answer to this problem, so organisations must consider technological solutions, process and operational adjustments, behaviour change as well as the fuel mix. Only through a holistic, long term strategy, can we bring about meaningful change in our use and stewardship of energy and the environment.
