AIRIUS – SOLVING THE BIGGEST WASTE OF ENERGY IN BUILDINGS

With thermal destratification becoming an increasingly popular method of reducing heating and cooling costs by up to 50% and in some cases even more, as well as reducing carbon emissions by the same figure, Airius, the worldwide market leader in thermal destratification fans, has experienced impressive growth throughout 2013/2014

destratification is becoming recognised as the most ground-breaking, unique and cost-effective solution for businesses of all types, from SMEs to huge international firms. According to utility giant DTE Energy, thermal stratification is the single biggest waste of energy in buildings today. With a customer portfolio ranging from

Boots to British Airways, and Mercedes to Morrisons, all of whom conducted extensive trials before buying, Airius has seen sales growth of 150% over the past two years. Now in its 10th year, Airius has enjoyed numerous successes, including winning the ‘Innovation Award for Environmental Technology’ at the highly coveted Environment and Energy Awards 2014. The awards, which took place in April 2014, are widely regarded as one of the highest accolades for sustainability in the corporate sector. Organised alongside the Sustainability Live exhibition, the awards recognise excellence and innovation in sustainable business practices, and Airius triumphed over stiff competition, including DIY giant B&Q, to scoop the award. energy usage and carbon emissions immediately, cutting the cost of heating and/or cooling, as well as CO2 emissions by up to 50%. It’s no wonder the Carbon Trust recommends destratification as one of its top three carbon saving measures.

IMPROVING SYSTEMS PERFORMANCE Airius’ systems maximise and complement the performance of existing heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, which are currently as standard designed to over-deliver heating and/or cooling to compensate for this stratification phenomenon. Airius systems are designed to be installed alongside all types of heating and cooling technology to optimise the distribution of hot or cool air - balancing temperatures, while significantly reducing energy costs and carbon emissions. Any facility that has a ceiling between

2.5 and 38 metres, and has a heating and/or cooling system, can potentially make significant savings from destratification. In some cases, even those buildings without heating or cooling find benefit from fresher environments, improved air change rate efficiency and IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) and the natural cooling effect of moving air during the summer, as well as recirculating heat emitted from lighting, machinery, office equipment and body heat during winter months.

it working for them? Impress Metal manufacturing, now part of the Ardagh group, made a £62,351 saving during the first three months following installation of the Airius system. Lush Cosmetics reported a ROI of 26 days at their Poole factory in Dorset. Morrisons supermarkets turned to Airius to resolve the problem of having too-chilly food aisles alongside too-warm household aisles and at the Genentech temperature-controlled pharmaceutical warehouse in Louisville, Kentucky, a major commercial disaster was averted after the US Food and Drug Administration found their high level warehouse racking was too warm to be fit for purpose. Airius destratification fans resolved these issues within days (see table opposite). The Airius product was also selected as

one of Architectural Products magazine’s “Top 50 Products”. The publication featured more than 3,000 different products throughout the year and Airius was shortlisted in its top 50, as voted for by the magazine’s readers. In addition, Airius received an Honourable Mention in the Ventilation Category of the 2014 AHR Expo Innovation Awards Competition, which took place earlier this year. This recent plethora of awards and recognition highlight the benefits of Airius’ systems, which are now being heralded as one of the most efficient and cost-effective means of reducing energy and carbon emissions. Later this year, Airius will be exhibiting

at the Energy Event 2014, the UK’s leading energy exhibition and conference. Showcasing its range of products at the exhibition, the Airius team will be on hand to assess how to get the best out of energy systems and make substantial savings for their customers.
