portfolio of single-phase components has now been expanded to include versions for 3-phase connection. The units provide output currents of 6.25A (787-738), 12.5A (787-740) and 20A (787-742).

Expanded ABB’s UK variable-speed

drives recycling scheme hits 100 tonne milestone

A

BB has now recycled 100 tonnes of old variable- speed drives, since it started its recycling scheme

in 2003. The ratio of recycled materials has also increased from 90 percent of the drive by weight at the start of the scheme, to 97 percent today. Drives are collected and recycled by certified

waste management company S2S, from 12 ‘bin’ sites across the country from Glasgow, Scotland to Sittingbourne, Kent, England. Both ABB drives and those produced by other manufacturers are collected through bins sited at the premises of ABB Authorised Value Providers. Larger drives or large quantities of smaller drives can be collected direct from the end user’s premises. The S2S site has a full waste management permit and is registered as an approved authorised treatment facility (AATF) under the WEEE directive.

temperature range of -25 to +70°C, constant output mode on overload and derating that does not commence until +50°C make these units an excellent choice for multi-faceted applications. These include information and automation technology, plant construction, building automation and process engineering. Like their single-phase power supply cousins, the three- phase ECO power supply units can also be connected in parallel. The output voltage can be adjusted between 22 and 28V using a potentiometer on the front of the unit for exact matching of the power supply to the particular machine or system. The integrated actuating levers make connection of conductors easy and time saving, as the clamping unit can be opened and closed without using any tools.

New plug-in and split-core current transformers T

o augment its existing plug-in current

WAGO introduces new ECO power supply units W

AGO's EPSITRON® ECO power supplies are an economical alternative when reliable 24 VDC voltage is needed.

Its existing

transformers featuring

CAGE CLAMP® technology, WAGO has developed two new versions with picoMAX® connectors. Well-suited for connection to digital measuring systems, their dimensions and shape are ideal for use in a 3 phase line circuit breaker with phase spacing of 17.5mm. With a 1% measuring accuracy, the 855 Series units transform primary rated currents of 35A or 64A into electrically isolated secondary currents of 1A. The new split-core current transformers are suitable for upgrading existing systems in which the current path may not be disrupted. They can be opened on one or both sides - ideal for installation in tight spaces. They transform primary rated currents of up to 1,000A into electrically isolated secondary currents of 1A. Their high level of

accuracy of up to 0.5% yields extremely precise current measurement. All transformers are supplied with colour-coded cables. Two UV resistant cable ties for reliable and easy mounting are also included.

-mac Technologies is set to change the management of buildings through interactive social media based software, following the launch of SMART.DASH. The new responsive web application technology is the UK’s first energy saving dashboard with a dedicated twitter feed designed to enhance energy saving opportunities and encourage active energy awareness from employees. SMART.DASH connects with the t-mac cloud displaying a buildings data, collected from areas such as meters, sub-meters, machinery equipment and renewables. It provides real-time energy insights with dynamic, intuitive and insightful views.

The use of the latest web technology ensures that it is completely responsive and viewable on all devices from tablets to desktops and smart TVs to mobile phones. A significant benefit of SMART.DASH is that it taps into an organisation’s own twitter account, allowing businesses to reach out through social media and educate occupants on energy saving at work while showcasing to customers.

Microturbines turn steam pressure reduction into electricity to cut utility costs

pirax Sarco has launched a range of pressure-reducing microturbines that generate electricity to reduce utility costs for steam system operators. Suitable for saturated or superheated steam, Spirax Sarco TR Steam MicroTurbines are available in two sizes, up to 700 kW. Higher electricity outputs are available on request. Higher pressure steam distributed from a boiler is conventionally lowered by a pressure-reducing station, to match the needs of the heating or process application. With a Spirax Sarco TR Steam MicroTurbine, the steam is reduced to the required pressure as it travels through the turbine, with the energy released by the pressure drop being used to generate electricity.

S

A microturbine producing 300 kW of electrical power can generate cost savings of more than £150,000 per year. The electricity produced can be used locally or exported and sold to the mains power grid. Industries with potential for using the microturbines include food and drink, chemical processing and pharmaceutical.

Tata Steel saves

7,400 MWh with ABB DriveSave

plant-wide series of energy saving projects has saved more than 7,400 MWh a year from Tata

Steel’s energy use at its Port Talbot steelworks. Altogether 62 ABB variable-speed

drives (VSDs)

were installed ranging from 15 kW to 200 kW. Conducted by ABB, the projects were performed as part of the ABB DriveSave programme, which guarantees that users will achieve a specified level of energy savings. ABB DriveSave is aimed at industries like metal processing, chemical, oil & gas and pulp & paper which are willing to make significant investment across many applications on a site to achieve targeted savings, totalling 1,000’s of MWh and above per year, with a return on investment in under three years. In addition to the guaranteed energy savings and the design, installation and commissioning of the VSD scheme, DriveSave offers a five year warranty for all of the installed drives, together with a five year preventive maintenance programme.
