JUNE 2014 INCREASING VSD EFFICIENCY LEVELS
According to Vacon, improved efficiency, longer working life and reduced environmental impact are among the many benefits available to users of its VSDs as a result of the company’s recent decision to use film capacitors in the DC link section of all its latest products. Stephen Takhar, managing director of VACON UK, said: “Electrolytic
capacitors have always been the weakest link in the design of VSDs and manufacturers have long sought an alternative. Film capacitors provide this and using them is allowing us to produce VSDs that are smaller and even more dependable than their predecessors.” “Another big benefit is that, unlike electrolytic capacitors that
necessarily incorporate a corrosive paste, film capacitors are environmentally friendly. This means the environmental impact of the VSDs that use them is much reduced, both at the manufacturing stage and at end of life.”

DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT FOR WATERPROOF COATING THAT PROTECTS MACHINERY
RS Components (RS) has announced exclusive distribution of the Ultra-Ever-Dry waterproof coating in industrial markets in France and the UK. The product is suitable for applications that require high levels of durability such as machinery in industrial environments, and can greatly extend the life of key equipment, enabling significant cost savings, the company states. Ultra-Ever Dry is a
superhydrophobic (water) and oleophobic (hydrocarbons) based coating that will repel most water-based and many oil-based liquids. The ‘omniphobic’ coating
ICON POLYMER PASSES AEROSPACE AUDIT
Polymer composite products designer and manufacturer, Icon Polymer, has been recertified by the British Standards Institution with its AS9100 aerospace standard after a
uses proprietary nanotechnology to coat an object and create a barrier of air on its surface. In addition, as the coating keeps
materials completely dry, it is an anti-icing agent; and as dust, dirt, water and other liquids never actually make contact with the base surface of the coated
material, bacteria and radiation are greatly diminished or even eliminated, making sterilisation easy where required. As well as protecting machinery,
the coating can extend the working life of gloves, tools and devices used by maintenance engineers.

full recertification audit. Hayley Jenkins, deputy quality
manager at Icon Polymer, said: “We are delighted to have maintained our aerospace accreditation, Icon Polymer prides itself on its high standards and precise attention to detail.” Having held the ISO:9001
standard for more than ten years, Icon Polymer was awarded the aerospace-specific accreditation in 2008 and later AS9100, Revision C. The latest audit was the full recertification audit that all organisations must undertake every three years, in addition to yearly surveillance auditing. “In the last year Icon has gained positions on many new aircraft platforms and achieving this certification is an essential element of how the Icon team operates internally and with our Supply Chain,” added Jenkins.
