PRODUCTS MACHINE BUILDING, FRAMEWORKS & SAFETY PLC/HMI OFFERS MACHINE DESIGN BENEFITS
At a press conference this May, IDEC introduced two new products to the UK market. The first was ‘SmartAxis Touch’, a combination PLC/HMI. This offers a range of features that provide the control and HMI needs for applications such as small machines, and feed and dosing systems. These are, in fact, already being used in applications including air drying and water purifying systems, pressing and stamping machines, pump and generator sets, greenhouse environmental control, and even theme park attractions. One of the first benefits of this product is said
by the company to be cost savings: as the unit has both the control I/O and display in the panel mount HMI body, there is no need for space inside the control panel to mount the traditional PLC. In addition, four relay outputs on the controller rated at 10A per point allows the direct connection of solenoids and small motors, removing the need for additional interposing relays – saving on wire and wiring time. If the application requires high speed
inputs from an encoder or similar pulse train apparatus, or the need to ‘catch’ the input from a sensor detecting a fast moving target, then
the built-in high speed inputs (single pulse 10kHz, four points or two phase 5kHz, one point) can easily accommodate this need. The device also has a 3.8in (100 x 300 pixels)
resistive touch display in either colour or mono, and a range of communication options – built-in RS232, RS485 and Ethernet ports, each working independently, allow the easy connection of a bar code reader (RS232), a process instrument such as a temperature controller (RS485) and up-stream data or information devices (Ethernet). The Modbus protocol is used in either Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP/IP formats; and the Ethernet port can also support remote maintenance. Functions such as data-logging and program transfer can be achieved through the integrated USB port while programming is done via a mini- USB maintenance port. The screen can be utilised to display the status of I/O, easily check/adjust data variables and even view the ladder program – all of which can be password protected with the security function. There is also a built-in real time clock with daylight saving function, suiting many building and environmental control applications. The new PS6R series, meanwhile, is a powerful

Italian packaging firm Cama has restyled its machines by integrating the control cabinets with the electrical and pneumatic components into the machine pedestals angles. Core to this redesign is the Festo valve terminal CPX/MPA. CPX, which has
protection class IP65, links the
pneumatic and electrical control chains and connects these simply, quickly, flexibly and seamlessly to any automation concept and in accordance with any company-specific standards. It also offers diagnostic functions. Among the new Breakthrough Machine Generation, Cama is introducing the CL
175, a flexible side-loading cartoning machine. This machine can load flow-wraps, pouches, bags, thermoformed trays, blisters and more into pre-glued cartons. In a first step they are picked from the storage station, opened and, by a rotary unit, placed into the moving conveyor pockets. The side-loading unit loads the products into the cartons with an
intermittent-continuous motion. This handling unit consists mainly of a Festo electric axis EGC for a precise approach to intermediate positions and a pneumatic mini slide DGSL. The EGC helped to reduce the mounting time by 30% compared to previous in-house electrical axis solution. The use of both pneumatic and electrical drive technologies allows high precision to be obtained together with a high load capacity. In a next step, the cartons move towards the final closure station. It can work in continuous or intermittent mode. Finally, the cartons get onto the outfeed conveyor.

yet compact switching power supply. IDEC is claiming to be the
first in the industry to offer a series of DC-DC converters that provide multiple voltage outputs from the single PSU base unit. The DC-DC converter module options can provide a range of voltages including ±5V DC, +12V DC, ±15V DC and measure only 21mm wide. They clip directly to the side of the main PSU unit, providing space saving and less wiring time, thus reducing the overall cost of the system build. The PS6R has an overall efficiency of 93% and
offers an operating temperature from -10 to +70˚C, which enables continuous operation.

SMART MOTOR REDUCES MACHINE BUILDING COSTS
Now available from Lenze is Smart Motor, a new drive for horizontal and vertical material handling. This is a combination of a standard IEC frame AC motor with electronics that allows any speed to be set in a range from 500 to 2600r/min. Speed setting is by NFC (Near Field Communication) which is contactless and can be done even before the Smart Motor is powered for the first time. This is designed to run at a fixed speed, but not necessarily at a single speed. The ability to use five preset speeds makes applications such as reversing conveyors simple and easy, explains the company. A start signal triggers the soft start ramp up to the first set speed. As the conveyor approaches the target position a proximity switch signal changes the speed to creep. At the stop position a signal takes the speed down to the third setting, zero, through the soft stop ramp. Two further speeds for reverse drive and reverse creep allow return to the original position. No panel space is needed for reversing contactors or soft starters. The product is available with helical, shaft-mounted
helical and bevel gearboxes for rated output torques from four to 650Nm.
