had some inhibitions about using this unique free oppor- tunity to obtain advice. The advisers are looking forward to communicative visitors at this year’s LASYS.
Stuttgart Laser Technology Forum (SLT‘14) focusing on combinations and brittle materials The Stuttgart Laser Technology Forum (SLT‘14) will also be the fl agship event in
the accompanying programme this year. It will take place on the fi rst two days of the trade fair, i.e. 24 and 25 June 2014, in the ICS International Congress Center Stuttgart and will focus on the transfer of know-how from research to industry and vice versa. The Stuttgart Laser Technology Forum has accompanied LASYS since the trade fair started in 2008 and is organised very successfully by Professor Thomas Graf, Director of the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW) at Stuttgart University, and Dr. Rudolf Weber, Head of Process Develop- ment at the IFSW. 460 people took part in the Stuttgart Laser Technology Forum in 2012. This is not surprising because the programme this year will again be both exciting and fi rst-rate. It will examine micro processing, macro processing and the related laser sources and beam guiding systems in regard to new applications. The key topics this year will be laser processing of ”diffi cult“ materials, for example joining of combinations using the corresponding X-ray diagnostics and processing of transparent, brittle materials such as glass. The latest developments in the area of ultra-short pulse lasers (USP lasers), ultra-fast scanners and beam shaping will be presented in this respect. The speakers covering approxi- mately 45 talks come from 8 countries. The talks are aimed at international visitors from industry, research institutes and universities. SLT‘14 will promote active networking. A tour of the laboratory at the IFSW on the evening of the fi rst event date will also provide the participants with an opportunity to forge valuable contacts. The complete programme for SLT‘14 can be downloaded at:

Practice-oriented forum ”Lasers in Action“ in the middle of exhibitors The forum ”Lasers in Action“ will provide valuable additional information for users from industry. Directly located in Hall 4, it will take place on all three days of the trade fair. Visitors to LASYS 2014 will therefore be able to listen to the talks without having to walk too far or spending too much time. The forum will feature, for example, solutions which have proved their worth in practice. All the speakers will be experts from the group of LASYS exhibitors. The forum is being jointly organised by the trade journal Laser Systems Europe (LSE) and the Laser Institute of America (LIA).
Introduction to laser technology made easy Anyone who has had practically no or very little involvement to date with the universally applicable laser technology will be in exactly the right place during the workshop entitled
”Short Course – Basics on Lasers and Laser Material Processing“ on the morning of the last two days of the trade fair, i.e. 25 and 26 June 2014. The organisers are the German Scientifi c Laser Society (WLT e.V.) and Messe Stuttgart. The Short Course has proved very popular to date because the contents of the talks pertain exactly to the previous level of knowledge of the participants. The Short Course will fi rstly provide an overview of what can be achieved with laser system techno- logy and laser beam sources. However, it will also closely ex- amine practical aspects, for example how larger components can be welded, cut or coated using a laser. Precision laser material processing in electronics production and precision engineering, as well as monitoring of laser processes will also be on the agenda. It will also be shown what new avenues can be explored in production engineering through rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing. And fi nally, the VDI Technology Centre will demonstrate how a company can acquire government grants.
