systems and integrated in automated production. In many cases they ensure cost-effective production coupled with higher productivity. The laser has already successfully replaced a large number of conventional production methods or has also created new production methods. According to the Association for Lasers and Laser Systems for Material Proces- sing in the German Engineering Federation, almost 400,000 laser systems supported industrial production processes worldwide up to 2013. This involves, for example, tasks such as marking, cutting, welding, drilling, structuring, material removal, trimming, hardening, coating or polishing in the micro processing and macro processing sectors. Laser systems are constantly capturing new application areas and other mate- rials. In addition to metals, plastics, wood, textiles or leather, they are increasingly proving their worth in a material mixture such as composite materials or in brittle/transparent mate- rials such as glass, ceramics and silicon. Laser beam sources and laser system manufacturers must therefore constantly face up to new challenges.
Focus on ”Laser additive manufacturing” and ”Robotics & Automation“ for the fi rst time
The two future-oriented trend topics of ”Laser additive manufac- turing“ and ”Robotics & Automa- tion“ at LASYS 2014 will demons-
trate that only laser technology, as an ”enabling technology“, allows more fl exible work processes in production and can therefore continuously extend its range of applications. Special attention will be paid to generative production pro- cesses such as laser sintering with which it is possible, for example, to print or assemble wear-susceptible components or spare parts in 3D in the fastest possible way, irrespective of whether they are made of metal alloys, ceramics or plastics. A laser only becomes extremely fl exible when used in conjunc-
tion with a robot. Together they form an excellent team, thus facilitating economically production even with small batch sizes. In order to make it even easier for visitors to rapidly reach their destination, the exhibition stands containing inno- vations, solutions or experience relating to these two focus topics will be identifi ed by means of a special logo. Visitors will therefore be able to quickly fi nd what they are looking for.
Great response to the accompanying programme
Another distinguishing feature of the international, user-oriented platform LASYS is the varied fi rst-class accompanying pro- gramme which is aimed at both visitors with experience of laser technology and newcomers. The accompanying pro- gramme has enjoyed a great response to date as an advanced training forum.
Solution Centre expecting communicative visitors Right at the entrance to Hall 4, trade fair visitors will again have the opportunity in the Solution Centre ”meet the experts“ to obtain information from competent advisers. Anyone needing to
solve a specifi c problem and maybe also carrying a compo- nent which is to be processed will be able to ask here for advice with no obligation. Experienced advisers from Bayerisches Laserzentrum GmbH (blz), the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW) at Stuttgart University, the Hanover Laser Centre (LZH), the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology (IWS) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) will be available alternately on all three days of the trade fair and will have an overview of which exhibitors offer the suitable technology or service to ideally solve a special problem. The Solution Centre is being organised primarily by the IFSW in cooperation with Messe Stuttgart.
