How to jump-start EPCS

Electronic prescription of controlled substances (EPSC) is legal in Texas, but physicians who want to practice EPCS have to clear a few hurdles first. Let’s get started:

Do you have e-prescription software?

NO

Shop for EPCS-certi- fied software. DrFirst, a software solutions company, can con- nect you with EPCS- certified electronic health record vendors at www.drfirst.com/ our-partners.jsp. Phy- sicians can also check Surescripts’ website, http://bit.ly/1h990Pc,

to find EPCS-certified vendors.

YES

Is your e-prescription software certified for EPCS?

NO

Contact your ven- dor about options for EPCS-certified software. It may only require a software update on your end.

YES Request a letter from your

vendor confirming the soft- ware passed an EPCS audit.

Now you can begin the identity-proofing process.

Do you work for a hospital or other large health care organization?

NO Find a federally approved

credential service provider (CSP) or certificate authority and begin the identity-proofing process. A list of federally-approved CSPs is available at www.idmanagement .gov/approved-identity-services.

YES

You can likely get your EPCS signing

credentials from the organization’s

credentialing office.
