used in various fields and recommended physicians and patients question and discuss their necessity. The resulting lists of “Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question” will aid conversations about many frequently ordered tests and treatments.

“It’s good information to start dia- logue among clinicians,” Dr. Monticciolo said.

She says the campaign can improve imaging use but acknowledges radi- ologists have little power over order- ing tests. Other clinicians really decide which tests or procedures will be per- formed for each patient, she says. “The Choosing Wisely suggestions highlight imaging, and we believe it can be more effectively utilized and help both patients and clinicians understand,” Dr. Monticciolo said. For example, Choosing Wisely advises physicians not to perform imaging “for suspected pulmonary embolism without moderate or high pre-test probability.” Dr. Monticciolo says radiologists should start discussing this recommendation with ordering clinicians. “It is not always the best test for a patient because of the exposure to high waves of radiation,” Dr. Monticciolo said. “Clinicians know this test is sometimes an issue, but this is a good starting point for radiologists to discuss with clinicians for patients’ overall well-being.” Dr. Monticciolo hopes the American

College of Radiology’s Choosing Wisely list can help radiologists engage consul- tants and further strengthen the relation- ship among radiologists, clinicians, and patients. n
