Pre-qualifi cation has started on a £100m proposal to build a 10km bypass east of Caernarfon in Gwynedd for the Welsh Assembly. Tender documents will be issued in the middle of May. A preferred route starting at the Goat Roundabout of the A499 and A487 and then bypassing Llanwnda, Dinas, Bontnewydd, and Caernarfon has been agreed and work could start in 2016.


Graham, Kier, Lagan and VolkerFitzpatrick are in the frame for a £21m deal with the Highways Agency to build a 0.9km viaduct over the River Chelmer near Chelmsford in Essex for the A138. A start on site for the contract has been pencilled in for October and the project should take about 10 months to complete.


Kilmarnock-based Land Engineering and MacKenzie are amongst the contractors chasing a £1.3m job with the City of Edinburgh Council to carry out improvements to the Waverley Bridge. Work revamping the bridge is expected to start this spring and run for around four months.


John Turner, Rowlinson and Preston-based Carefoot are in the running for a £750,000 package on the fi rst phase of a street scene project at the market place in Radcliffe near Bury in Greater Manchester. A decision is imminent as work is expected to start on the phased project this spring.


VolkerLaser has a £2.8m package of works to Drypool Bridge on Clarence Street in Hull for the local authority. Work started on site last month (March) and is expected to run for around six months.


Costain starts work this month (April) on a £6.5m project to build a road linking the A48 and A476 at Gorsal near Llanelli after edging out BAM Nuttall to take the contract with Carmarthenshire County Council. Work will take around 15 months to complete and be supervised for the council by consultants Atkins.


Skanska has won a £50m contract to provide all infrastructure services, including primary and secondary roads and pathways, on Cambridge University’s new north west development. AECOM, Gardiner & Theobald and Turner & Townsend are also working on the scheme as consultants to the university.


FP McCann and John McQuillan Contracts have bagged places on a minor works measured term contract for the DRD Roads Service in Belfast that is expected to see spending of up to £4.6m. The work will be carried out in fi ve different regions across Ulster over the next three years.


RJ McLeod is expected to start on site in July on an £8.5m project to build a link road in Elgin after beating a number of other contractors including Balfour Beatty to the job for Moray Council.


J Breheny began work last month on a scheme for house builder Countryside Properties to build a four- arm roundabout on Essex Regiment Way at Springfi eld near Chelmsford in Essex. Civil engineering consultant URS will supervise work on the project, which also includes a new priority junction on White Hart Lane and has been designed by architects Harwood.
