IHE Council met in Belfast this February and was hosted by Northern Ireland’s Offi ce of Transport. Council member and rapporteur Nick Newton takes us through the proceedings.
Having arrived in Belfast in the morning a number of informal meetings took place to catch up and discuss outstanding Institute matters before the executive board met in the afternoon. After the executive board meeting was concluded we held a joint evening meeting with members of both IHE and the Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT). This was an opportunity for local members to come along to discuss local issues with the current IHE president Richard Hayes together with the CEO Stephen Palmer and the presidential team and members of the executive board.
The following day the portfolio groups met to discuss various Institute matters. I sat in the professional development group where we discussed the new professional certifi cates for cycling infrastructure and for road safety engineering. We also discussed a number of issues surrounding CPD and also fi nalised a number of training courses for the coming year.
One of the highlights of the council meeting was to hear that the membership had ratifi ed a record number of applications and shows how the Institute is growing which bodes well for the future. We also discussed the current situation with our impending experiential route.
Another topic discussed was IHE at 50, and we have a number of ways where we plan to celebrate the IHE’s 50th birthday. Watch this space.
IHE Council goes on the road June elections to take place
Opportunities are now available for talented individuals to serve on the IHE Council.
All interested members are invited to apply and make a valued contribution at the heart of the organisation to help achieve our vision of becoming the Institute of choice for highway engineers.
Serving on Council as an ordinary member involves a three-year term of offi ce and will mean attending Council meetings on three days per year (Council meets in February, June and October). Council members also join one of
IHE‘s four portfolio groups and active participation in the groups’ activities is expected.
IHE Council has seven vacancies for ordinary members available together with two vacancies each for regional members and student members.
Joining Council is an excellent way to improve your transferable skill sets in collaborative working, chairing meetings, infl uencing others, business skills and policy formulation. The application form is available on the IHE website.
