Norwegian company SafeRoad was keen to show off its SafeEnd energy absorbing end terminals at Intertraffi c. The product has been developed by SafeRoad subsidiary, Birstaverken.
The crash cushion is developed and tested according to the ENV 1317-4 and prEN 1317-7 standards.
Features of the product are fast and easy installation, narrow width allowing usage at places with limited space and low weight. The terminal can be used in combination with any existing safety barrier system, in the centre of the road as well as along the road.
Anders Hamrin, marketing manager for roads and bridges, said: “SafeEnd is a new generation of end terminal. It has been tested at 100kmph and took us a year and a half to develop.”
According to Hamrin, SafeEnd is lightweight and easy to install and repair. For repairs, you do not need to close the road for too long, which reduces the risk of long queues and traffi c jams.
Border Barriers launched a new self- weighted safety barrier at the show.
The BBS Road Runner is specifi cally designed for quick deployment in freezing conditions, or when water isn’t readily available.
It has an interlocking base design which allows for quick installation and is able to create a temporary delineation system whilst preventing unwanted ease of movement.
The barrier is ergonomically designed, reducing wind resistance and is manufactured in the UK from 92 per cent recycled material. It has a wide range of applications ranging from inner city areas, railways and street works to airports, pedestrian safety and car parks.

At Intertraffi c Amsterdam, SPIE presented its global ‘Smart City’ vision, with a focus on transport, mobility, as well as improving the urban environment and its facilities.
SPIE endeavours to promote sustainable urban mobility by contributing to the development of low and zero-emissions transport. The company also plays a major role in improving traffi c using intelligent transport systems designed to optimise vehicle management and provide real-time information to operators, drivers and travellers, whilst improving the condition and safety of transport infrastructure (roads, motorways, airports, railways, and river and sea ports).
Steve Henry, operations manager for SPIE UK, said: “One of the signifi cant pieces of business that we’ve done
over the last three years is LED lighting in highway tunnels. We’ve partnered with Philips and there are fi ve tunnels in the UK that now have LED lighting as a total solution. We’ve carried out the fi ve installations and Philips has supplied the products. They’ve monitored the energy that’s being used in three out of the fi ve tunnels and they have come out as being 82 per cent more energy effi cient. It’s been a big tick in the box for us as the UK business. We’ve got repeat business direct, without even going to tender, because of the quality of the installations that we’ve carried out.”
Henry thinks there will be further investment in the ITS market in the UK going forward.
He added: “We might not get business out of Intertraffi c, but what we will get is recognition as a leading player in the European market.
“If you read the papers and believe the government there’s going to be a big spend on infrastructure. I think our roads and highways are below standard compared to if you drive around Amsterdam. They’re so far advanced with technology it’s unbelievable. If we’re going to keep up with others there’s got to be investment.”
TRL Software (the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory) showcased TRANSYT Online, a new product that will soon be available to engineers across Holland. TRANSYT Online extends TRANSYT’s functionality and allows optimised signal plans to be sent directly to on-street controllers to allow frequent retiming without the need to go out on the street in response to events. It is hoped that TRANSYT Online will soon be available in the UK.

Managing director Philip Armstrong said: “Intertraffi c is not only an ideal opportunity to launch new products, but also for us to catch up with existing customers and meet new clients to help understand their future safety requirements.
“People have shown a lot of interest in the product. We’re up against a lot of competition in the marketplace, but good quality products always shine through.”
Jeanette Holder, sales manager at Rediweld Traffi c Products, was happy with the international feel of the event.
She said: “For us Intertraffi c is the best European show. We distribute our products to a number of countries including Holland, Belgium, France and the US. It’s a good way of us seeing our European customers and clients.”
Rediweld offer a range of products that provide alternative solutions to traditional materials, using recycled rubber. These include RediPave refuge and splitter islands, BusPad level access boarding area, RediKerb surface kerbing, etc.
The event also offered a good opportunity to fi nd new distributors, added Holder.
