At a time when margins are being squeezed in all directions, energy and resource effi ciency represent a smart approach to reducing costs and releasing resources to be spent elsewhere.


There has a shift in the paradigm of waste management and waste contracts and waste is now traded as a commodity on the open market. Even if this is at a low fee it will shift the balance dramatically, especially if the waste is transformed into a material usable as a Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) or Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF).


There is technology available that reduces the waste volumes and costs by 50%, taking the non-reusable or recyclable waste and making it either a product for a biofuel or an SRF. Where volumes are signifi cant, through


the clustering of stores or partnering, there are also opportunities to generate power from the SRF, so creating additional energy savings, generating low carbon power, creating free heat and potential revenue streams through exporting to the grid. This is both for gas to grid and electricity.


In fact, all waste can now be reused. Whether it’s anaerobic digestion of food waste carried out to produce gas for fuel, or RDF – there are now many ways in which waste can avoid reaching landfi ll.
