Financial information has been reported by businesses for decades, if not centuries. There are well-resourced fi nance teams, mature processes and controls dedicated to ensuring such results are reported accurately and are able to stand up to scrutiny from a diverse range of stakeholders.
In stark contrast, the measurement of waste– how much waste is produced, what types of waste are produced and what happens to it once it leaves a business–is relatively immature. Such capabilities have only started to be developed in recent years, and as a result, there is typically some way to go before waste-related information reaches the necessary level of detail and accuracy.
Why does this matter? Waste-related data and insights are being used to inform evermore strategic decisions – it has to be correct to help business leaders make the right choices.
Internal and external stakeholders are increasingly asking for accurate information about waste. Senior management needs to expect the quality of waste-related data to be as high as it would for any other part of their operations.
i REGULATORY CHANGE
In addition to the fi nancial pressures associated with growing energy costs there is, of course, regulatory change:
• The Energy Act means that in April 2018 it will be against the law to rent out commercial (or residential) premises where a minimum energy effi ciency standard has not been achieved
• Landfi ll tax is set to increase to £80 per tonne on 1 April 2014
• The UK Waste Regulations (2011) implement the European Waste Framework Directive, which requires waste producers to apply the waste hierarchy to encourage more waste prevention, reuse and recycling. With targets such as: Recycle 50% of waste from households by 2020, Recover at least 70% of construction and demolition waste by 2020
