Australia OPEN ROADS
Australia is a vast and diverse destination but exploring by road gives travellers a chance to really get to know it. Julie Baxter and Jo Austin suggest six routes that will put them on track to a great driving adventure
Driving in Australia is scenic, safe and pretty easy on uncrowded roads. With road signs in English and driving on the left, it is also a far less daring option than in some other self-drive holiday destinations. While total distances of some iconic driving routes can be vast, others are totally manageable and the longest can be enjoyed in bite-sized chunks.
There are over 800,000 km of road crisscrossing Australia, of which less than 50 per cent are sealed so for those looking for adventure, it’s easy to discover. Self-drive combines well with domestic fl ights to eat up the biggest distances and with campsites well equipped and countrywide, motorhome hire makes for an
affordable and fun way to combine accommodation and transport. Remote outback roads need to be tackled with caution and it is important to check distances and not to overdo the driving at the expense of time relaxing along the route. For a taste of what’s on offer here are six diverse itineraries your clients might like to consider.
