Ranch Rodeo Skills Never Go Out of Style

By Ellen H. Brisendine ehbrisendine@tscra.org

T

HIS MONTH’S COVER OF A COWBOY ON THE RANGE COMES FROM MARCUS BIRDWELL, Austin. Turn to the last page of this issue and you’ll fi nd the cover from February 1929 by Erwin Smith.

In the image from 85 years ago, the cowboys were clogging to music

around the campfi re. One of you modern-day cowboys is going to have to tell me if you’re still clogging around the fi re or if these days you light up your iPad and blog around the campfi re. Though some things change on the range, the skills of cowboying es-

sentially remain the same. Those skills will be tested this month at the fi rst TSCRA Ranch Rodeo, part of the Chisholm Trail Ranch Rodeo at the Oklahoma Horse Fair, Duncan, Feb. 7-8. This is a new event for TSCRA. The Ranch Rodeo Working Group — Jon

Means, Seth Denbow, Blake Birdwell, J.R. Ramirez, Paxton Ramsey and Wesley Welch — has organized 3 TSCRA ranch rodeos for 2014 in which teams from Texas and Oklahoma ranches will showcase their skills and compete for glory. This venture for the association is designed to provide great family entertainment for a great cause: TSCRA youth and educational programs. I hope you’ll attend one of these unique events this year and cheer on your favorite team. This month’s editorial focus is on range and pasture management.

Thanks to The Cattleman Range and Pasture Management Manual, spon- sored by DuPont and mailed with the November 2013 issue, we know to scout for weeds early to get the best value out of herbicide treatments. Photos of common weed seedlings are included in this issue. Carry your

printed copy of The Cattleman, or the electronic version of The Cattleman Plus on your tablet, on drives through the pastures this month to identify sandbur, thistles and other weeds early. As my friend Gerald Hobson says, the earlier the better when it comes to treating weeds. If you’d like a copy of the range and pasture manual, call me or email

me with your postal address and we’ll get it sent to you. The manual has monthly tips for helping your manage your pastures and rangelands for optimum use and plenty of photos to help identify problem plants.
