commercial crossing” A Lasater Beefmaster customer writes: “The greatest single compliment to your breeding work is, I believe, the extreme similarity and uniformity of the offspring regardless of the dam. This indicates, I believe, that you have the genes well ‘drilled’ and that a fair degree of inbreeding exists. This is good as far as being a superior animal for commercial crossing.” The Lasater Ranch, having begun crossbreeding with Brahman cattle in 1908, recognized and established the value of the three-way cross (Hereford-Shorthorn-Brahman) during the 1930’s. It was upon this three-way cross that the Beefmaster breed was built. In 1936 we began performance testing our bull calves, being the fi rst ranch in America to recognize the value of this important tool. The Lasater Beefmaster herd, foundation of the breed, has been completely closed to the introduction of outside blood for 62 years. For commercial crossbreeding the blood from a closed herd such as ours is of inestimable value provided, of course, that the herd has been selected for the six essential characteristics of intrinsic value over a long period of time. The beef cattle industry is at last waking up to the tremendous value of intelligent crossbreeding, a tool long used by plant, poultry and swine breeders with telling effect. As Victor Hugo said, “Nothing else in the world … is so powerful as an idea whose time has come.”

The time has now come for the idea of intelligent

crossbreeding of beef cattle. It is the wave of the future. And you can ride the wave today.

Thanks for the Thanksgiving Mention Just a short note to say how

much I enjoyed your “Conversa- tions with the Editor” article in the November issue of The Cattleman. It seems the retailers are completely forgetting about Thanksgiving and already promoting Christmas. Thanks again!
