YOUNG CATTLE RAISERS

Saddle Up for Cattle Raisers Convention Cow Camp! By Kim Smith, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Foundation

C

ALLING ALL COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS, AGES 5 TO 12: IT’S time to head ’em up and move ’em out to the 3rd Annual Cow Camp, hosted by the Texas

and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Foundation (TSCRF). Cow Camp is a fun-fi lled day of history, arts, crafts and friendship held on the Saturday of the annual TSCRA Convention. “TSCRF exists for education,” said Pat Riley, ex-

ecutive director of the TSCRF. “Cow Camp allows our youngest members to connect with our ranching heri- tage, our organization and each other.” This year Cow Camp will be held on Saturday,

April 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the famed Witte Mu- seum in San Antonio, marking our fi rst collaborative event. The inaugural Cow Camps were held at the Cattle Raisers Museum, giving our young members a chance to explore our collection of artifacts, ex- perience the grandeur of our Omni Theatre, hear stories of the range from a professional story teller and learn the “tricks” of the trade from a trick roper. Together, we created bandannas, stamped leather and made friends. “Camp staff reports that the fun continues after the

day ends,” said Riley. “They get phone calls from par- ents trying to connect with the families of other Cow Campers who their children have befriended during the day and want to spend additional time with.” In 2014, our young members will experience the

new Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg South Texas Heri- tage Center at the Witte Museum. The facility encom- passes 20,000 square feet including historic Pioneer Hall. Here the stories and people of 1850s South Texas come to life in interactive exhibits, art, artifacts and live performances. The designers have mixed old and new together in a way that captures people’s attention and their imaginations. Don’t be the last one out of the corral for this fun

fi lled, memorable day. Space is limited to the fi rst 50 cowpokes, so parents are encouraged to register their youngsters for Cow Camp when they complete their family’s convention registration. The cost is $25/child and includes lunch, snacks, and camp supplies. Regis- tration is conducted on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. The Witte Museum is located in close proximity to con- vention headquarters and fi nal transportation details are being worked out.
