Project management at TfL is ‘increasingly successful’
TfL is becoming more efficient, the Independent Programme Advisory Group (IIPAG) has found. The panel’s third annual report oversees TfL’s investment programme.
The IIPAG found that in 2012/13 TfL had improved its project management, provided better commercial performance and re-investment of contingency from projects.
The Victoria line upgrade, LU’s track replacement programme and the Bank station upgrade have been commended for best practice.
London’s Transport Commissioner, Sir Peter Hendy CBE, said: “IIPAG continues to have a positive impact on TfL and the way in which we deliver the investment programme which the capital’s infrastructure needs.”
Arriva cabs fitted with driver advisory systems
Arriva Group’s train fleets are to benefit from £4.5m new driver advisory systems across Arriva Trains Wales, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry and Grand Central rail operations.
The technology will help to offer smoother and more efficient journeys, while reducing fuel consumption by up to 15%.
Real-time route information will be delivered to drivers, helping to monitor train performance, reliability, and to travel at the optimum speed.
The contract has been awarded to TTG Transportation Technology, and will be installed
Work on the second Metrolink crossing through Manchester city centre is set to begin in January, TfGM has announced.
The three year programme will increase capacity, flexibility and reliability on the tram service, as well as providing new stops in Exchange Square and St Peter’s Square.

A pre-series Class 317 unit has undergone a £7m overhaul to improve performance and reduce maintenance, Angel Trains has announced.
The work, with Bombardier
Transportation and Abellio Greater Anglia, included a complete interior redesign to increase capacity and ensure Persons of Reduced Mobility (PRM) compliance, engineering work on the doors and major re- traction work to move to an AC power unit.
This will allow faster acceleration during
2014. Its managing director Dale Coleman said: “We will be working closely with Arriva UK Trains and its fleet maintenance facilities to introduce Energymiser DAS so our technology can deliver its full potential for Arriva’s passengers, drivers and operations.”

The European Commission has announced
its support
for Shift2Rail, a public-private partnership that will invest €1bn in making rail more attractive to European passengers and freight users.
The initiative, run by the European Rail Industry Association (UNIFE), will bring together research and
just outside Manchester Victoria station. The plans were formally approved by government in November, and work to divert gas pipes, electricity and phone cables will begin in January. The whole programme is expected to be complete in 2017.
Cllr Andrew Fender, chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “This will be the starter pistol for a marathon civil engineering
and regenerative braking. The interior refurbishment includes new seating and additional grab poles, larger vestibule areas, CCTV, a climate controlled environment, wi-fi throughout the vehicle and passenger information systems.
Malcolm Brown, CEO, Angel Trains, said: “These units will provide a complementary option to the building of brand new trains.”

Second City Crossing work to start in January
project that is an essential part of the Metrolink expansion.
“The Second City Crossing will increase the capacity, flexibility and reliability of all of the network’s new lines and enable them to operate to their fullest.”
Peter Cushing, TfGM’s Metrolink director, said: “It’s a significant piece of work and not without its challenges, but we have learnt a huge
amount
successfully delivering new street-running lines to Ashton, Oldham and Rochdale town centres and to Wythenshawe and Manchester Airport and we will be drawing on this experience to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.
“We have also established strong links
with businesses
in the city and I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t already done so to get in touch so we can keep them up to speed over the life of this project and beyond.”
