Whether it’s a piece of art, a product design or an entertainment brand – such as those films, kids’ TV shows and computer games licensed to various theme parks in recent years – anyone involved in producing an original piece of creative work is generating intellectual property, or “IP”. That even includes me writing this column; although my friends tell me there’s nothing intellectual whatsoever about my prose. It’s not even that creative, they add. No matter, it makes me a living.
And that’s why people and companies can be so possessive about their intellectual property; it’s often taken them time and effort to produce it. Therefore they expect to be compensated if someone else wishes to use that IP, whether that’s by paying to watch a film, buying a book or acquiring an MP3 online. Of course many people who download music over the internet don’t pay for it; often illegally. But it’s not just musicians that are being deprived of potential income. “We are vigorously protecting our intellectual property,” declared Alberto Zamperla at November’s IAAPA Attractions Expo in Orlando. Issuing legal notices against several rival ride manufacturers, not just those in some of the places you might expect but also some closer to home, he threatened to pursue both suppliers and buyers of “counterfeit rides.” As one of the industry’s most prolific ride builders, Zamperla has been the victim of some of the most blatant copying, with virtual clones of some of the company’s hit rides filtering out of factories in various countries. However, I understand Alberto may also have his eyes set on companies that produce similar kinds of rides, and that could be a harder case to prove. Zamperla traditionally contributes one of the largest booths at IAAPA Attractions Expo, and this time was no different. Another Italian manufacturer, the SBF/Visa Group, also had a significant presence at the Orlando show. “We are the only company displaying two rides on their booth,” export manager Augusto di Santi informed Park World. “But Zamperla has three,” his colleague chipped in. “I know,” replied Augusto, “but we are the only company with two.”
