In DETROIT, the 3.3 mile Woodward Av- enue Streetcar is soon to be under construc- tion. The firm of Stacy and Witbeck has been employed to manage the construction. Stacy and Witbeck of Alameda, Calif., has over- seen construction of 17 streetcar and light rail projects over a 30 year period. Ken Borg was kind enough to provide the information. WISC., PCC streetcar operation has re- ceived the okay to add a North/South Route. The present line links the Metra commuter rail station with the city marina and two parks. Federal funds will pay up to 80 per cent of the $10.3m capital cost. October 2013 saw the use of an initial part of the $4 billion WORLD TRADE CENTER REDEVELOPMENT, with the opening of an underground concourse closed since 9/11. The 600-foot long passageway connects the PATH rail system, ferry serv- ice, subway lines, and the Fulton Street Transit Center. cars have been ordered and are intended to be a major break from the earth toned cars that have been doing duty since the 1970s. Six batches, totaling 1134 cars, have been put into service, all of them mechanically


and structurally similar so the cars from dif- ferent batches can be run on the same train. The new cars in the 7000 series will be 748 in number, and the $2 billion-plus order is expected to be completed by 2018. The last of the old cars should be gone by 2040. The new cars are being built by Kawasaki in Lincoln, Neb. Thanks to Henry Goode and David Harris for the information. The design for the new CINCINNATI streetcars will feature orange, white and black exterior colors. It will be a while for line construction to prepare a place for the cars to run. The 3.3 mile project is controver- sial and the politicians will be fighting this for years after service begins. Thanks to Charlie Bogart for the news. MESA, ARIZ., is a fast growing city that expects 170,000 new residents in the next 30 years. What to do as far as transit in con- cerned is a matter of importance between 2013 and 2018. It is expected that light rail will be completed to Gilbert Road between 2018 and 2033. Where to extend light rail will be a major concern; it appears there may be enough money for six miles of track.
